New to upland birds..

Hello, I have been a lab guy for 20 years, I’ve trained many waterfowl retrievers and participated and done well in HTs and FTs.

I also guide waterfowl hunts in TX.

However, I recently have become somewhat obsessed with learning everything I can about upland birds and pointing dogs. I have big dreams to travel North America over the next 10 years and hunt all the upland birds this great country has to offer.

I’ll still be hunting waterfowl and looking into a PP as my first versatile breed.

Awesome! During my time running HTs I have seen a lot of different breeds and really none others compare to labs in my opinion when it comes to the retriever games..however my interest in PPs began when I saw one run a HRC test and it had great water attitude and was hard charging. I immediately went and asked the owner all about the dog and have been very interested ever since.

I don’t expect it to be what my FT bred lab is but my FT bred lab also has her flaws.

I may do some NAVHDA testing but I am over putting so much emphasis on the testing/trails and want to get back to what made me fall in love with dogs in the first place and that’s spending time in the field and having a dog that’s part of the family.
 
Well I’ve been around a bunch of them, I’m all upland and travel north every year and end with quail in Texas and surrounding states. Be happy to chat sometime.
 
So I am a Lab guy that switched to a PP about three years ago. I have friends in the high level lab game with many titles between them. I wanted a pointer but didn’t want to give up the retriever instinct I was used to. I will tell you that you are on the right track. I have hunted her with those guys several times the last couple years, and she held her own very well. What she lacks in method, she made up for in determination and stamina. She held her own well and when they were wearing down on a 50 degree day, she still had gas in the tank. Nose wise and hunt drive she was extremely competitive. Mix in pointing abilities and I’m sorry I didn’t do it sooner.

That’s awesome to hear, I’m very excited! I just have to find the right breeder and litter. Depending on a few things I could be looking as early as this spring or into fall 2026.
 
Welcome and good luck Brady! And If I were you the first place, I'd look for a pup would be Quail nerd's breeder. That's a fine pup!
