Hello all,

after lots of time lurking, Ive finally decided to post. I went on my first quail hunt about 2 yrs ago, and got hooked, bought a dog, trained him, and have NOT hunted quail or any upland game since my first hunt.... mostly due to 1. im not rich and cant afford 400.00 hunts 2. dont want pen raised birds, thats what i trained my dog on, so i want something wild

So here I am apparently like the rest of Texans coming to Kansas for upland game. I assure you limiting is not my concern, its honestly seeing my dog work ( i feel terrible he hasnt been out t hunt), and at least getting a chance to try my terrible shooting.

Im not here to get any secret spots, or even places to go... Ive done some research on here and asked around and have a couple walk in spots planned for jan 21st.

my problem lies in actual hunting them, i really honestly wouldn't even know where to start, the only thing ive learned about hunting pheasnnt i have read it on here... where to start, where they live, etc etc

im going with my brother and a friend we ARE driving from houston, and are planning to hunt a saturday and sunday around Meade area. Willing to pay someone a couple hundred ( or whatever its worth to you) bucks to act as a mentor for the day, someone that can show me good hunting technique...

again Im not looking for someone to give me a good spot, or a honeyhole, or anything like that, if you can recomned one than cool, if not i understand... I see those spots are highly coveted on here.

Thanks

ANY OTHER ADVICE PLEASE GIVE

Welcome to the site.

I'm sure you'll get somebody that will take you out without payment.

My late season hunts typically involve a WIHA map, a truck, a dog or two, and a lot of walking. Like has been discussed countless times on here, find a good looking WIHA that has cover and crops joining it or across the road. Get out and start hunting. Walk slowly. Walk Quietly. Walk into the wind. Don't yell at the dogs. Don't yell at your buddies. I typically just follow the dog and see where he takes me. Eventually he'll get on a sent, and if all goes well you'll get a point/flush or the bird will jump within range.

Good luck.

JW: I'll be doing the same only going before you. I'll be heading to KS right after Christmas. Coincidentally, I'll be in Houston later this evening for Thanksgiving. I live north of Dallas. I'll be glad to share what little info I've gathered and I also have the WIHA maps with me too if you want to see them this week sometime.

X2 on Cheesy's advice.

Good hunting technique is just quietly following your dog and if you get an opportunity for a shot, don't miss. Start the dog off more-or-less into the wind and don't bother him unless he looks thirsty or has wandered onto property you don't have permission to hunt. That advice is totally free of charge. Good luck to ya!

Be Quiet and you will kill'em

Lesson 1...Be quiet late season roosters are wiley and if they hear you coming the will run and flush out of range. So don't slam truck doors or be barking out orders to dogs and guys. Keep it slow and quiet , you will find birds. Good Luck

PS- anyone ever look at the size of an ear on a rooster? If not you should.

Kick'em Up!
