Ground looks like late August!!!!! 95 degrees today with gusty winds!!! Fire went from 50 acres to 3000 acres in 8 hours!!! They are in save structure mode and that is it!!!
As of this evening, 5000 acres and growing rapidly, 0% contained, 10 buidings destroyed, 2 people unaccounted for!! Smoke all the way up to S. Dakota. Winds gusting to 25-30 and shifting From S.W. to N.W. Firefighters only working on saving structures at this time. Suppose to be 20 degrees cooler Tomm.
I was sailing on Union reservoir in Longmont and at 9:30am saw a little whisper of smoke and then it just kept getting bigger and bigger with such speed. It looks devastating.
aT 14,000 ACRES and out of control!!! Hard for me to see the North end of the fire because of the smoke, but The South end is blowing up again with big plumes rising high into the air!! Last night it did not lay down at all and it found some large areas of Beetle kill pine that went up like someone threw gas on it!!! West of the fire there is Miles upon miles of red pines ( Beetle Kill ) Will be ugly if it gets there even though fire is what is needed there, maybe just not as big all at once!!!
Just updated to 20,000 acres!!!! 39 hours since it took off!!! Still not fighting the fire. #1 priority is to get people out and save what structures they can until more help and Mother nature gives them a break!! Moving in all directions and is not safe for anyone in front of it! Smoke plume hit 21,000 feet high! 1 person is still confirmed missing!!! Hope and pray for everyones safety!! Thinking a lightning strike on Wednesday sat smoldering until winds made it take off Sat. morning!
37,000 acres burned and they say they probably lost 100 homes last night!!! Another update at 8 pm our time! Fire was moving 1 mile an hour! Suppose to heat up with temps and really no rain in sight!!!! Winds are going to be the key I think!!!!
Need lots of rain soon ... but none in the forecast.

I went up to Laramie over the Memorial Day weekend. On the drive up and back I noticed that there was a lot of brown starting near Wellington ... relatively green from Broomfield up to just north of Ft. Collins. I had thought that it might have been due to irrigation and distance from Big Thompson or St. Vrain, but maybe it has been (more) exceptionally dry in that area???
I took the dogs into the foothills this past weekend along Peak to Peak between Nederland and Estes ... there wasn't much snow, but it didn't appear to be exceptionally dry. Made a point to touch some of the needles and leaves ... they weren't bone dry / brittle like I have seen in other dry years ...
Have not had anything in a while as far as moisture goes and the winds and above average temps have made everything look like August.
Update: 41,000+, 1 fatality, Fire Looks better at this time than last night with the winds staying calmer and not as gusty. Should make some progress early Tomm. with all the new help arriving. There will most likely still be some homes lost tonight, but hoping and praying not!
Prayers headed your way for those families affected by the fire and the firefighters fighting the fire. We went through this last year in Oklahoma I spent many long days and nights on the firelines and can tell you that it is very demanding job and at times you can feel helpless.
If there is no rain in the forcast, then pray for High humidity, low winds and a good backburn operation aided by airdrops.
