How are the crops holding up to the drought in the north central part of the state (Aberdeen to Mobridge)?

Does it look like the birds have been affected?

It depends who you ask. Some will say come on out, and I'll tell you how the numbers look in December after you hunted in November. If you ask me, I think numbers will be dramatically affected by this drought. The drought hit hardest at the absolute worst time in early June. Haymaker will be this boards best source of information for the area your asking about.

The drought has had its affect on bird numbers and cover. In the last month we have had several nice rains. There will be good cover here and I have seen young birds but not in large broods. 6 weeks ago I thought hunting would be like hunting on the moon but now there will be cover. Corn harvest will be later this year. Corn and beans have both made amazing recoveries since the rain. I am speaking for my operation. Things in the general area I think will be tough due to loss of habitat. If you ask our local game warden I think he would tell you it will be tough. My guess is that here will be a little tougher than last year but last year was a good year.
 
Get the government to raise the CRP cap and a few decent winters in a row and I feel they would come back up.
 
Spot on Haymaker. Not many people are aware how detrimental the current crop insurance policies work. It's a scam, I will leave it at that.

Agreed, if the current administration is serious about cutting, that would be a good place.

U Betcha:

- Convert the 2 million acres back to grass that the $8 corn converted to crops
- Get CRP back up to 1.5 million acres from the current one million
- Put more conservation in the cropping systems (aka less corn/soybeans)
- Crop Insurance was the same then as it is now but reform could certainly help.
