lucky day

here goes not sure if it will work.

came across these guys last Friday am, on the way to work. They where about 10 yards of the road fighting. As I slowed down to check it out, I realized they where hung up. After a couple of phone calls, one to my sons, and one to the Sheriff, we found them exhausted laying in a milo field not 20 yards from where I last marked them. Both bucks where both alive when we found them. After another call to GW, they decided to issue a salvage tag for one while we decided to tag one ourselves. The deputy shot one with his pistol and my son shot one with a crossbow, per GW instructions. As you can see, the way they where locked exposed their underbellies. The yotes would of had a field day. The bigger buck (9 points) is right at 140 while the smaller(8) was right at 125. Looking for head mount ideas, if anyone has any, feel free to share.
The real killer thing about this, the next am, on the way to a different field, I drove by this place, and a real monster walked across the road, heading into the milo. Hope it cools off soon.

Congratulations and thanks for doing the right thing.

Quite a story.

Heartland Outdoors in Hutchinson has this pair of locked bucks on display. If I recall correctly, they drowned themselves in a pond in Barber County(Medicine Lodge). Heartland has a lot of nice mounts on display.

Separated a pair like that one time. Fun story. Cost me a dent in the truck door and a lot of fancy foot work. Too many spectators to euthanize. Nice sharp axe will cut off an offending tine.

Nice catch! Saved a lot of suffering!

Sounds like a very lucky day,,, for you, not so much for the bucks.

I hope the meat tastes ok. I've heard that in cases like that they can build up so much lactic acid (I think that's what it was) in the muscles and it can affect the flavor and texture. You'll have to report back on the quality of your backstrap dinner.:p:thumbsup:

I shot the rack off of one with a .243 once to free two of them. I shot the horn right above the head. They were tangled up in a barb wire fence as well as locked up.

we are a little concerned about that. depends on how long it is aged, we also had 20% pork fat added, so that should reduce any extra gamey taste, we hope. suppose to get the meat back Friday, will have backstraps on Saturday, so will let you know
