Lost My Best Friend

The reason it hurts so bad is because he made such a huge difference in your life. The worst part is when you go home and expect him to be there and hes not.

Hang in there we're all here for you.

my condolences,
Scott

re

Ruff is out there running free chasing all the birds he can handle now.

Hang in there man, it's like losing your best friend. But time will heal the wounds.

Sad for your loss, friend. Have 5 pups buried under trees in the backyard, can't think of any of 'em without getting choked up, even after all these years.

Learned to walk holding on to one of them, learned to hunt with one of them, learned to drive with another in the backseat, had one see me through the death of my dad, had one as my best man when I got married.

I'll always have a dog with me at every milestone in my life and those milestones are even better because of them.

Hope you are able to carry the good times with you as I do.

Mnmthunting,

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. Some people won't understand, but we love our dogs because they are more than just pets. I lost my 6 year old setter, Major, in June. He was a good bird dog, my fishing partner who spent hours in the boat with me, and a companion the rest of the time. I've had to put down 4 dogs and this was the hardest because he was so young. All of the others were old and I was prepared because I knew the time was coming. Not that it makes it any easier. I just finished reading "Grouse Dogs" by Richard Weaver and stories of his setters reminded me so much of my own dogs, each different that there were a few nights I had trouble getting to sleep after reading.

I'm expecting a pup from future breeding, but for now am dogless, too. Good luck in the future and I hope that future includes another pup, too.

Mnmthunting,

I'm so sorry for your loss. I get tears in my eyes every time I hear of someone losing a good friend like that.

It is so hard to put a pet down and you really think about getting another. Yet, it seems to be the best healing factor. Take your time, but you'll know when it's ready to find another friend. You'll find new fun and at the same time keep the memories as you see similarities and differences with your new buddy.

MNM, you bring a tear to all of our eyes! It is the worst feeling to lose our huntin' buddies and are best friends. Hope time heals your sadness, and when you think of Ruff it will bring back great memories and many stories!!!

Really don't know what to say.
You old timers have seen many a pics of Ruff Ruff with all kinds of feathered critters.
Never been a better friend or companion.
Ruff has been everywhere with me.
Ruff Ruff was 14 and a half and happy until a couple days ago.
He got hamburger and the best. Sad, couple days ago he did his best to eat.
Ruff Ruff was a house dog, pet mostly. Couldn't hold it down, totally would mess for no reason in the house, crawled as best he could to get outside. [I had been lifting and carrying him in and out for a month or so].
Then he had this sad doggy look and I knew it was time.

So? I know Ruff Ruff was only a dog. Why is it so hard?

The only reason I'm burdening Y'all is cause you are all dog people.

I have also been there , love my dog more than most family members. Sorry for your loss. god bless

Good people! ALL of you, THANKS.

man we have all been there at least once some of us a couple times and no matter how many times it never gets any eisier

Best Advice I ever Got

When I lost my dog, my cousin gave me the best advice ever: Get another dog.

Wow, reading all those about makes me want to cry. So sorry about your loss, I'm dreading the day I have to put my lab down. She's been a great friend. Dogs are wonderful creatures, take care of yourself and think about all the memories that Ruff has created through the years.

I'm sorry to hear about Ruff. Losing a great dog is like losing a family member and your best friend. Hang in there Wayne.

I can feel your pain

Just had to release my best bud of 13 years.

The miles that he travelled with me, in truck and on foot.....I don't think they make rulers that long.

To say that he was one of....if not....the most intelligent pheasant dogs that I have had the privilige of trailing behind would not do justice to his memory.

Years 1-2 got his paws wet.

Years 3-5 he was that oh so talented 1st round draft choice that was living up to expectations.

Years 5-9, com'on roosters show me what you got....I seen it all.

Years 10-12, He could find them....but the chase was one-sided and not necessarily in his favour....even walking in the tough stuff was not enjoyable for him.

This fall....a little bit of his ashes will be spread on every honey-hole that we visit.

Narco....you are missed

My Condolences

I, too, am very sorry to hear of your loss of Ruff!

When I saw the title of this post, I really didn't want to open it (with Bear lying at my feet), but, I made myself.

I am glad I did (despite the snot running down my face at the moment), because is is really cool to know there are so many good people that care so much about both their own dogs and their fellow man who has lost his best friend.

We all dread the day, but, I keep telling myself one thing...

THE ONLY THING WORSE THEN LOSING YOUR BUDDY, IS NEVER HAVING HIM IN YOUR LIFE IN THE FIRST PLACE!!

Cherish all the great memories over the many years you had with Ruff and, when the time is right, do it all again with your next best friend in honor of Ruff!! I think he would want you to provide a great life for another one of his buddies!

I wish you the best!!

Like all the others have said it's amazing what a good dog brings to your life. I had a year where I had to put down 3 in a 12 month time frame for one reason or another,it was brutal.

I can't encourage you enough to get a new partner to share the trophies and frustrations out in the fields. I have one that will turn 10 this month and my daughters were just asking me about him last night. It made stop and think for awhile. When I saw your post I had to read it.

Turn around and get another one and this time next year you will be giddy to get him out in the field to see him learn the ropes.

Best of luck.

I am very very sorry for your loss. I can remember back two years ago when I got my pup and spending many hours reading posts from you and your dog Ruff, you both have been able to teach me and my young dog so much. Thank you both for everything and good luck!

I will soon have to face what you are facing with my 12 year old Brit, Ginger. I have to lift her into the truck and she just had a tumor and her spleen removed. She and I did go pheasant hunting opening day in Pierre, SD No pheasants. :-( I have been helped on RAINBOW BRIDGE on line. I don't know how I will face it when it comes but I do know we will see our pets across the Rainbow Bridge some day.
We weep with you. God Bless.
