Losing Birds???

Does anybody know how much cold and/or snow & for how long before we stand a chance to lose some of the surplus birds during such a beautiful CO year for pheasants???

Also, if a buddy & I do brave the elements & get out rooster-chasing these next couple of brutal days in which the birds should hold tight till the dogs literally push em up with their noses in a powdery/cackling spray - would we possibly be endangering the birds that we missed & the hens we put up, just be shooting at birds that are going to die anyway, or it makes no difference because the elements are not brutal enough yet for a bird freeze/die-off???

My guess would be at roost for the evening could be damaging. If you bust em during the day I dont think there is any problems. Go like hell cuz if you dont someone else will. I seen roosters flying to feed at roughly 10 this morning.

Thx guys, just didn't want to do anything to unnecessarily hurt the population...And now I bid you all adieu 4 the nite. Must get a little rest, for we have an ambush or two planned for the crack of dawn tomorrow! :D

Looking at the forecast I was wondering the same thing actually. I'm headed out tomorrow (Weds) morning. Long drive from denver:rolleyes:.

You fellas are braver than I. We had a hunt planned for this morning but canceled seeing as it was -16 at DIA with a -35 wind chill at midnight. Looks like Yuma got close to -25 last night. I'll wait til it gets back above 10 to go out. Good luck though!

Thx for the advice eng & winchester...You should have sucked it up & gone wilson! :)

Today was the best pheasant hunt of my life so far (even though it did start out well below zero)!!! I have always heard about & dreamed of rooster-chasin in the cold & snow - it was even better than advertised!

We were in birds all day long & many of them held so tight the dogs had to root around & literally push em out with their noses (even the many point-blank hen flushes were a hoot & good training for the dogs)! Judging from the never-ending birdiness of the dogs, I don't think we were able to get up even half the birds in some of the gnarlier stuff we were bustin in the snow!

Not to worry, they ain't all dead yet...just half a dozen between the two of us and three dogs! :D

Ahhhh, I hope you're kidding! I was out too and only saw birds on not-hunter-friendly land.

It was cold, but still better than work.

Good job, glad to hear somebody had a good bird day:10sign:.

Goggles

I just told my wife tonight before I went out to blow snow for 2 hours that I needed to get myself a pair of those ski googles. Screw the safety glasses because in weather like this they just don't hold up to the task. I need to find someone who puts the glow bug yellow lenses in ski goggles.

I'm glad you guys had an awesome day chasing the rudies!!
