Looking Forward to Opening Day

headed Southeast

I'm headed to Allen county to hunt some private and public land and chase some of those crazy bobwhites. I really want to see the dogs get good work in. I usally go out west but im tired of hunting with 10 other guys and having all of them yelling at my dogs trying to get them to hunt differently. I probably wont see another sole because they'll all be out west. but Quail hunting is my shorthairs expertise. I know the quail population is down but we'll just have to work harder for a 3 man limit.

I will head to the liberal/hug. area the following weekend.

me to

my thoughts exactly i like the quail to! ten to fifteen guys lined up doesnt appeal to me either cowboy some guys dont know what a bird dog is kb still yelling at them after they have shot over him all day and his dog is yet to make apoint lol me you and 4 fun should go sometime

Bilbo I dont think we have met unless we have talked by a field on a road somewhere. I would be cool with hunting with you sometime if you want, just say the word.

I plan to go to the Bucklin area opening day. For the past 10 years plus I hunted with a farmer from that area and his extended family. My son and I are the only two non family members in the hunting party but they make us feel like family and we always have a great time; most years get our share of the birds. Then on Sunday I will hunt around home here in Sumner County with my fellow coaches and former players.

Glad to see that I'm not the only one that hunts Bobs as the primary & not just a bonus bird that you stumble across.
Looks like I will be in southern Nebraska for a couple weeks getting warmed up before the season opens in Kansas. As for getting ready about all I'm doing is getting out on the bike 2 or three times a week & exercising my girls. Other than that it only takes about 30 min to load the dogs, throw in some old shotgun, hook on to the pop-up & we are off.

This is what our camp looked like last month in Montana

Pop Up Campers are Cool

I like your pop-up. They're a nice compromise between a camper/fifth wheel and a tent.

Graham and Sheridan Counties

The Happy Hunting Grounds are scattered about Graham and Sheridan Counties.

Southeast KS

KS Cowboy:
We plan to be in your Allen county area around Nov. 14/16
Have access to hunt several farms near Iola and Garnett.
Do you live in the area...or will you be traveling also?

Roger WYO:
Set up looks great...How old is your setter?
Other hound a Griffon?

Best of luck to all!!

68- I live about an hour north of garnett. we have one track of private land about 10 miles SE of Garnett and it is very good. normally see 3-4 coveys. its not big but there are always good amounts of birds on it.

KS Cowboy It is good to hear that there are bobwhites in the area. I went to school in Iola and my dad still has a small farm just outside of Iola. I learned to hunt walking the hedge rows with my dad and his friends in the 1970's. Always a lot of birds back then, I hope they make a come back. Lets us know how your hunt in southeast Kansas goes.

heading out to SW Kansas....down around Dodge City, cimmarron, Garden city

will be heading out weekend before Turkey Day to our usually area....been going out there since 1996...buddy that I hunt with said last year between all of us during the season we shot something like over 200 cockbirds...not sure how many hunters that includes (within the legal possesion limits I am sure

Taking my 10yrs old son out....he won't be actually shooting however figure he needs to get out with dad and see what it is all about and maybe let him shoot some cans and such with his BB gun and carry his sling shot around...ya know, kind of like I did back in the day when I thought I was Huck Finn and/or Tom Sawyer...

Kids nowadays don't even know who those boys were....

Just have to buy him some real, real warm clothes in case it gets chilly and we get some weather in by that time...

Shithouse mouse--that's the same camper I just traded a pup for. Have you ever had problems with the crank?

There were a few birds out there last year....anyone think there are going to be good counts this year? The Fish and Wildlife Department doesnt think there are...but I rely on hunters to tell the real story...thanks..Doug:cheers:
