Anyone else putting up the shotgun this week, and picking up the rifle instead? I know I am! Hopefully back straps will be on this weekend's menu at the house

Are you going after one of those NE Kansas monsters?

We will try to get a little rifle hunting in.

Now that is what I am talking about!

But ask I must, "Do you usually wear an Western Kansas Pheasant Hunting sweatshirt to shoot a NE Kansas deer?" :):)Lucky shirt, maybe?

Congratulations! Last year's trophy?

haha i love that sweatshirt. and no thats this years bow buck

and its also my grandpas buck he shot this year, not mine btw, i did manage to kill a pretty good buck tho.. :D

Sweet. Going to have to put a tracking collar on you and find that honey hole.:)

You kind of fit my description of a "cross dresser". :DMaybe the deer don't take you serious, wearing a pheasant sweatshirt in NE Kansas

see thats the trick up here..make um think ur pheasant hunting... and they just laugh.. then u shoot um

Here is a nice Kansas Buck!!!! Not me!!! Unfortunately!!!!

Now that's a big daddy! I'm actually trying a new spot this year. I noticed several game trails when I was out there scouting for turkey earlier in the fall, but when I went back to set my blind up, I didn't notice them as much. Hopefully it's just the dry weather.

And, hopefully my blind is still there. With the wind we've been having the past few days, it's likely to be in Missouri now

Thats a nice deer Bleu

And I say this as a matter of preference only but am I the only one who doesnt like the tall racked deer like Bleu posted (hes big enough Id shoot him for sure) but he wouldnt get my rocks off like a wide racked deer does. I dont know its probably like a blonde vs brunette thing .... ha

Seems like where I hunt Ive seen more taller racked deer. Not sure why.

Can't eat the horns.:p I'm hoping to pile up a couple does. MMMMM.

I am hoping for a January doe hunt at the ranch, if all falls into place. If it happens, you are welcome to come shoot some does.

I could handle an elk backstrap, and would take one from Colorado, if it couldn't be one from the Byrd ranch in Kansas. Harvesting an elk on my place is on my bucket list along with a Rio turkey. I just wonder if there will be a flavor difference?

YOU DA MAN, MR BYRD!!!

I have 2 tags that I've been trying to fill with my bow. First season bowhunting... Lots to learn... If I don't get them with my rifle I will definitely be giving you a call! No luckier than I have been this year I REALLY appreciate having a back up plan.

FWIW, I know KDWP has taken some abuse on this site in the last couple days, but I think the "any season, any county, whitetail" tags are a stroke of genius. Plus, I ended up buying a bow just so I could extend my hunting season. There's some tax dollars headed for their budget, and I supported the local archery shop as well. With a little luck maybe I can even feed my family...

Deer chili, deer jerky, deer sausage, bacon-wrapped backstrap steaks... I even ate deer tacos last year. Can't beat it!

This year the extended doe season(Jan 1-9th) will apply out here, where in years past it hasn't. My sons and I will have extra doe tags this year to fill and I think I can get some extra tags for herd management. Buck/doe ration really out of whack. Was planning to host a youth hunt or wounded warriors hunt, but some health issues with my wife and myself may delay that for a year until we can get ourselves back to somewhat normal(whatever that is).

Maynard, I think that's a great idea. I hope you are able to make your special hunt happen. I missed out on (volunteering at) the Riley Co youth/disabled deer hunt this year because it fell on the same day I was helping at the kids fishing clinic. Hopefully next year they will schedule them on different weekends so I can do both.

Please let me know when you schedule your special deer hunt (January 2012?). I would jump at the chance to provide any assistance I can with a youth/wounded warrior doe hunt. In fact, I would consider it a priveledge to drag and field dress a deer for a youth or disabled hunter.

P.S. I hope you and your wife's health gets back to normal soon.
