Lions--Tigers and Severe Thunderstorms---OH MY

Went to Mitchell today and used all the secondary roads to get there. What I saw was very upsetting. There was a severe thunderstorm thru areas to east of Platte the other day and some damage was reported---but I was not ready for what I saw.

The outer edges of the storm did a lot of wind damage to mostly corn in that lots of it was laid over --some fields as much as 40 to 60% but the beans did better. Then the hail damage started and thru the core of it there were no beans save the stock--no leaves left what so ever and the corn was almost as bad--just bigger stocks left. Trees in shelter belts were striped of leaves. :eek:

The damage was from just SW of Aurora Center to Corsica to Stickney and SE toward Delmont and areas just west of Parkston. On radar the storm went SE from Delmont and leaving SD in the Yankton area but I did not get South of US 18 today so I really don't know about SE SD.

The bottom line is that in the core area of this I find it hard to believe that any of the small game lived thru it--it's a bummer of a deal ,but golf ball to baseball sized hail driven by 70 to 80 mph winds will do that--I stood on my back deck and watched this monster slide by NW to SE about 10 miles away.

Even the cattail slews were beat to death. :(
 
That is just sad to me. I'm sure glad you all weren't caught in it. I hope they had some insurance and that the game will come back.
 
Nice report Jim and thanks for the heads up. Glad you are living in Platte Full time now. Looks like Charles Mix came out unscathed.

I pulled up the daily precip and gives a pretty good indication as to where the weather was from the precip.(Map below)

After a little analysis I see our J Bar Camp Hyse County got 1/2 inch out if it and Wolf Creek in Hand got less than 1/4". The Boars Nest in Miner and both Pheasant Camp Lodge and Cattail Haven in Charles Mix all got a little shy of 3/4". Worthy of note that 4 of 5 locations are better that 50% still below the average monthly precip for July yet. Wolf Creek being the exception which is at average rainfall of 3" for the month.

Jim that's a nightmare report for that part of the state. It sounds like it was a fairly large area too. Definitely a wildlife killer no doubt, on top of all the crop damage. Just like that the tables turned.
