I've owned many pickup trucks with toppers. My dog always rides inside with me. I used to sleep in the back a lot, with a little propane heater. I like to motel it these days, or I use my slide in camper occasionally.

I used a pick up with and without the topper for many years. Been driving from SC to SD for 30 years. Last year had truck problems right when trip was scheduled and had to use my daughters 100 series Toyota Landcruiser. It worked so well I sold my truck and found one with less than 100k miles. Usually they are one owner vehicles due to the high initial cost. I paid 15k for mine. The original window sticker was in the glove box. 65k! So most that buy them take care of them. They are bullet proof over built off road vehicle with luxury features also. And, as if they had the bird hunter in mind. Third row seats are removable giving plenty of room. Fold up the 2nd row. Two hunters two dogs and pheasant and duck equipment. The rear hatch opens and it has a tailgate like a truck. Perfect for cleaning birds cooking etc. Rear air /heat for dogs. Also if they get smelly the rear side windows open to vent.
All time 4x4 and rear lockers to get out of the bad stuff.
