I am ready to be shamed again when I go "grouse hiking".

I *should* have a bit more time this year to scout around and maybe do an overnighter up in Rout National forest. ... but I am fully prepared to be shamed again! ;)

We have dove season starting on Sept 1. Then early Prairie Chicken season start around the 15th.

Looking forward to my grouse adventures again ... nice to get out and hike around with the pups in the mountains, even if we don't find any grouse, but it would be more fun if we did.

I was just checking on Prairie Chickens in CO ... no public lands are open to hunt Prairie Chickens. To be honest, I've never seen a Prairie Chicken in CO.

More later, I am being summoned to resume my painting duties.

;)

I've seen chickens once that I know of. A flock of them settled into a cut corn field. I first thought they were phez, but then they looked like quail? They were lesser chickens in Yuma county and that was one of those cool things that you see from time to time.

Here we go again with all the brags from (can't remember his call name/sign) for this forum. He had pics every week from his grouse hunts. I think he shot all the grouse in Colorado ;)

Yeah, don't think I will try my luck with grouse this year and instead stick with dove. At least it is a shorter drive

I was hoping to shoot at least one, then put in the freezer and pull out every weekend for trophy pics! ;) My co-worker always hassles me about pheasant hunting pictures "those look just like the ones that you shot last week". ;)

A good business would be to drive around Eastern Colorado with shot pheasants and a camera with the banner "Don't go home a loser - Colorado Trophy Shots"

Nice Greg..... I never bragged about grouse hunting. I have even given advise and direction to those who asked. I have just been chasing grouse for over thirty years and have developed a knack.
There are plenty of grouse around I haven't shot them all. Maybe if schedules permit you can join us on a hunt or two. Winter wasn't brutal so the bird population should be pretty good. I am going to chase Ptarmies this year so if anybody wants to go for a high altitude hike let me know. Think I have a spot but could just turn into a hike.

Matt

CO_Weimar if you go to the sporting clays shoot we can compare notes.

Matt , I think Greg was just funnin' you!!!! he is a stand up guy. I have met him and hunted with him and his boy! I think he is frustrated by the Grouse Monster!!!! Once he figures them out, he will be hooked.

Figured he was messing with me... He has haranged me in the past an I never take any slight. You're right about figuring them out. Once you put a few on the ground then the fun begins....

My Son was impatient for Sept 1st so he went out last weekend and bagged 34 Eurasian Doves, I'll have to get a pic from him to post up

Nice! If I wouldn't get in trouble for shooting my shotgun in Northglenn, I could bag 10 or so at my mom's house. ;-)

I'll be there.

Even if I don't get any, I have a good time running the boys and walking the shotgun.

Looking forward to doing some shooting - perfect time to get in some practice.

Thanks, actually I have shot Ptarmies while stationed up in Alaska at Elmendorf. Would go to Hatcher's Pass over near Palmer, AK and hunt on snowshoes with my old yellow lab Conan. Good times

Matt, I might just take you up on that....you know I was just giving you some jazz is all ;):p

Chad,
Thanks for the support...I do appreciate it. Yeah, I was just a little bit frustrated after driving a ways and especially having Colton with me (my now 14yr old son) and those who have teenage boys or had, you know how it is when you don't see anything:mad::eek:::eek:

Greg

My buddy took his son and his friend to the youth opener in Kansas last year. They went to the first field, dog went on point within 100 yards of the truck, 10+ pheasants popped up - the boys weren't ready - took no shots, then saw nothing the rest of the day except for a covey of quail. :(

Hey guys have been following this thread, and decided to jump in when I read retrvrman's post about taking his son and not seeing anything.
If any of you are over on the west slope during the sharptail season; I know of a youth mentor area with sharptail that I have never seen anyone hunt.
Let me know if I can help.

Been there and done that....I have always wanted to try the youth opener in KS. So non-resident youth can hunt that day also?

Greg,
I knew you were just funning.. I know of some spots down in your neck of the woods... Maybe my hunting partner and I can head down and meet up with you and your son.
I know how tough it is being skunked especially being 14 years old. Kind of disheartening. When I was his age I loved dove shooting.. Always managed to knock some birds down and have fun.

I saw a bunch of sharp-tail grouse and sage grouse on one of the "ranching for wild life properties "which would be private property but there was lots of nat. forest intermingled and a big piece of state trust land.pm me if you want,
every body don't need to know on the same day

Hey guys , ruffie hunter from Tn here. We are headed to wyoming in september in an attempt to shoot some sage and blue grouse.I have hunted keith er but have hunted sharpies in North Dakota and ruffed down here. Any of you all been up to who to hunt? Any advice on Blues or Sage? Thanks!
