Late season Prairie Chicken

My dog Indy has managed to cut himself up badly for the 2nd time in a month, and is on the IR for a couple weeks again. 40+ stitches and some staples. So my SIL Blaine and I took his 10 month old Llew pup Mia out as the only dog. She has really come a long way in the last few weeks. In the last 3 day Blaine has shot quail, the first pheasant and the first Prairie Chicken over her. This is a really nice male, that he is going to have mounted. Mia retrieve it, made a victory lap, but didn't damage the bird at all.

THAT'S the way to start a pup! Nice pup and nice time out Steve! Yes, by all means get that chicken preserved!!!

Wow, nice job on the PC! We saw a bunch on a hillside Friday, but no good way to make an approach. That's great the pup is getting so much experience.

Sorry to hear about your dog, you might need to get him some tactical kevlar gear or something to keep him from getting torn up so bad. Hope he heals up enough to get out on some wild birds this season.

Beautiful chicken! I saw probably 75 or so in a bean field just west of the house a few days ago.

That pup has grown!

GREAT pics Steve...WOW...that's NICE CHICKEN for sure...I'd mount that one too!!! sorry to hear about Indy again...what is he getting torn up on?

Was this a straggler from a flock or a loan one the dog pointed?

There were a total of 3 of them there. Mia pointed, 2 of the chickens went up, then a hen. Blaine had not seen PC up close before and didn't shoot. I yelled to him that they were PC, but it was too late. This bird then came up a few seconds later.

They were on the edge of some heavier cover. So I don't think they saw us coming.

During this time of year, I generally see the dog point them, then they flush before you can get in range for a shot. I have had a couple time where I have had Indy standing on PC at a couple hundred yards. But once I get inside 100 yards the birds flush wild. But this cover was much thicker than I normally find them in.
