ok so i kno there already threads on this somewhat but i wanted to post a new one because my situation is alittle different. so i had a buddy that called me and said asked if i wanted a lab pup, he found two black lab pups a guy couldnt get ride of. they were about 4 months old at the time, they didnt come from any outstanding blood lines just a family pets. so we decided to take a gamble on them. they are both just over a year old. my dog is twice the size of my buddys now. his doing a tremendous job. i was mostly gunna use mine for waterfowl hunting. started off great, retrieving like a champ. wasnt breaking. thought she was gunna a great dog. about august she just stopped retrieving. didnt want to retrieve or really want to do anything for the part, just wanted to lay in the cage all day. i would leave the door open and she would only come and see me and then run right back in and lay down. she acts scared to come out of her cage. im not sure why. ive tried for feching with her and she just wines and doesnt want to cooparerate. she acts scared of everything including me half of the time. i havnt done anything abusive or anything like to make that (that i kno of) so im not sure what the deal is. i hate to call her a worthless dog, but could she be just plain worthless?? sounds but i need some help on this guys, do i give away to a good family? or do i try and keep working with her? ive become really frustrated with her and dont know what to do. i would appreciate and help from anyone. thanks.

What happened that day. There has to be something. Did you blast right over the dog her first trip out? Think. What happened the day she quit? There is always a reason for this behavior. Let us know so someone can help.

Lymes??????

I only mention this because they were rescue dogs, but I would not rule out parasites. I have known similar situations, in which dogs about that age, were overwhelmed by whip worms. For some reason makes dogs shy and retiring, hard to get rid of too. Vet recommended 3 days of Panacur horse paste @ 100# dose for every 10#'s of dog. Be careful! Overdose is very possible, and even when you don't some dogs get sicker for a couple of days. Also possible to pick up a water borne disease if you did a lot of water work, usually caused by algae bloom, creates a blood born toxin. Requires blood tests, which is where I would start. Otherwise, it is a physical problem, ( injury), or a ( sorry to say), inadvertant man made problem. Could have been done while you were gone from home, meter reader, fireworks, any thing could happen. First the vet to eliminate injury and or sickness. Second to the pro trainer to figure out what went wrong. Neither cheap, or easy.

Go to the Vet

Let a vet take a look at her. If you have been kind to the dog there must be a medical explanation.

thanks for the help guys, she has spent quit a bit of time in the water this summer, i will get her to a vet to check things out

springer i honestly cant. unless its just the fact of the lack of live bird activity that i was able to work with her, that she has just lost intrest, but even now live birds arnt really seeming to get her excited.

Well you can check her out at the vet but I bet she's fine. To me it seems like she was put in to a situation that scared her. If you say she had a lack of live birds then take her duck hunting with possibly a few guys. Well we all know what a barrage of rounds sound like on a cool dark morning. Lots of echo and really can be traumatic to a young dog. I suspect this is whats up. You will not be able to hunt her any more this year most likely if that is the case. She may never like duck hunting again. You have to go all the way back to sq 1. Puppy fun.101.
You need to get her out of the crate and shut the door. Let her just walk around the room with you, lay on the couch, watch TV ect. feed her out of your hand and that sort of thing she only eats out of your hand or you holding the bowl. Scratch her head as she eats showing you mean no harm and I'm sorry type a thing.
It will be all about confidence building for quite awhile. After she gets used to you again and comes like her old self, lay on the couch and toss a couple dummy's of her favorite kind.
Really praise her up and rub her up. Hopefully you can get her to do that, then there is a sign of life. It may take a few weeks so do NOT rush her. Let her do it on her own. Do Not hunt her or show her a gun....
Once she seems normal with dummy's in the house, take a few tosses out side. And just a few. Keep the retrieve sessions often and short. Once she has confidence you can mix in a frozen pigeon. Then move to a live pigeon with the wings taped, no flapping. Get her this far and if your receptive to hear more I will try to guide you through it after that if you want. This is just what I think is going on, I think she was scared and now is possibly gun shy and relates that experience to you. I could be wrong but it sure sounds like it. She may just not have been ready for that type of shooting. And when they get spooked it can be dramatic.
