knocking on doors

Tried knocking on doors once before with 0 results, good, bad or otherwise. Now that I'm older maybe I can be a little more diplomatic in my encounters...or one would think.

All good ideas Zeb

All good ideas Zeb........

A few of my rules:

Never park truck where they can see your non res plates.

Never wear your shell vest to the door

Always put on your oldest dusty John Deere hat.

Always be polite as possible even if u don't get permission.

Always return and thank them if they let u hunt. Usually. offer a few birds. but they hardly ever take them.

Success rate runs about 50% for me

dakotazeb are you kidding me thats along the same lines as getting a handicap sticker if you have had some sort of odd injury that set you back for a while In my opinion that is unethical and who cares if your a vet they arent inspecting your car tag its the person they are talking to but hell I blew out my knee a couple years ago had surgery couldnt walk for 2 weeks I think i'm going to get me a dissabled sticker so I can park closer when I go to walmart

Guess

WOW...guess u are not a vet...:(

veteran or not that should not be thrown out there for a landowner to pick you just becouse you have served in the military they should give you permission based solely on your actions and your manurism not whether you have a vet tag or anything else come on thats lilke a little kid throwing a fit OOOH OOOH pick me pick me please use some morels about the situatuation

Being a vet I'll somewhat agree with GCB... You see guys posting on craigs list about "Veteran Looking for hunting Land" "Soldier looking for hunting acess" etc... kinda pisses me off, I never felt like I should get special treatment because of that.

Trust me there are some pretty stupid people in the miltary, that i would never even consider sharing the field with.

But at the same time, if someone was going to go out of their way to show their graditude for serving by letting me hunt their land I'm sure not going to turn it down.

Also comparing it to getting a Handicap permit for an injury that doesn't really absolutely call for one is beyond ridiculous..... Every Vet has earned that right and to be able to carry that one to their grave.

"Once a Marine Always a Marine" so please don't compare that to jerkoffs that get a handicap permit to park closer then get out of their care and run up to the door of wal-mart, seen it happen! lol

Wow, there brother....I served over 20yrs and by gosh if I owned primo land in SD or KS and two fellows came up and I could only offer one permission to hunt and one guy either was retired military, served in the service, disabled from the service, a veteran in some way and the other guy wasn't, well then the veteran would get my choice.

Military service is a choice there isn't a draft anymore, wake up!!! I chose to serve my country and you didn't, not my problem.

I wonder how many doors I've knock on in my day??
Well:eek: quite a few.
I'm a VFW, never once used it. Don't at all like the thought of it.
Have to say, it's not easy like it used to be. Still a good chance.

Yes amen my friend....I agree I dont' EXPECT special treatment as a result of my service. I mean when I was wearing the uniform, people would buy me lunch, drinks, and stuff and say thank you for my service...I would feel guilty because I hadn't been to Iraq or Afghanistan (I did serve in Desert Shield/Storm and spent 120 days in Saudi for Operation southern Watch)...

However, I will tell people what I do for a living now and what I did do. I am proud of my service....

Well thank you for your service. I am sorry that you feel that way, however to compare it to the handicap thing is wrong.

Also, my eldest daughter has cerebral palsy and cannot walk , so there fore she drives a powered wheelchair.

I have permanent handicap access for my truck and van with her lift in it. I have NEVER EVER PARKED IN A HANDICAP SPOT WITHOUT MY DAUGHTER BEING WITH ME.....ever.

I feel the same way. No one owes me, anything for my service. I cant believe this thread got to this.... Dekotazeb, made a suggestion, and I believe he had good intentions. Can we get back to the point of this thread, knocking on doors.:)

ok I was wrong comparing it to bieng handicaped but i still feel that it doesnt matter that you were in the military or are in right now it still shouldn't be used for th purpose of gaining hunting ground and i'm glad you did serve i chose not to after having three of the four friends who inlisted killed in dessert storm your right my choice this thread is also about gaining permission the old fashioned way not buy spending a crapload of money just so we can shoot a few birds also a choice some of us make face it Life is choices some good and some bad who cares

I was always forced to ride the...."short bus" to school. Does that qualify?..

BTW... THANKS to each and everyone of you that serves their country! :)

Since we are chasing rabbit (I mean pheasant) trails here, I'll add in a brief religious lesson: My good Christian mother (God bless her soul), taught & exemplified one lesson in particular for me her whole life long that I will never forget - Jesus said, "You have not, because you ask not"! Specifically when it comes to gaining permission to hunt private property in prime habitat that is not already burned over by hordes of hunters - if the answer is already 100% NO all of the time without doing a blasted thing, how much worse can it possibly be just for the asking...NO + NO STILL = ONLY A NO! However in my case, that no has often become a YES simply for the asking & it's werked fer me on avg anywhere from 35-50% of the time nation-wide (for dove, geese, ducks, hogs, even turkey & pheasants - not so much for deer)!!! I ain't no rocket scientist & each to his own, but I'll just keep right on asking for as long as it werks at least once-in-a-while...Funny thing is, it's also worked in a lot of other things that are totally unrelated to hunting as well (& I am also a fairly generous soul myself, just so long as I am courteously ASKED first & not presumed upon or ran over roughshod like I didn't even own the place)! :p

Sure hope we're not going politics next! :D

back in the 70's there wasn't much public land

we didn't go out in the off season knocking on doors-

we'd go out and stop in at a likely looking farm- park a bit away from the house, one person walk to the door and knock- we wanted to show we weren't a large group out to kill we only wanted to have a good time and get into some birds-

first thing the person would do is look at us and our vehicle- ask where we were from and how many were going to hunt

you can bet that person payed attention- most times we got the ok with the intention of not shooting a lot-

we'd stop back in and talk about the good time and thanks- we'd get the ok to come back

seems now days folks go arround in the off season- drive nice shinny rigs and want to get hunts set up-

personally- I'd rather see them in their hunting setup during the season
a couple drive up- don't hurry to get to the door- be patient and polite- maybe comment on the surroundings- talk about where they're from and how much hunting they want to do

sure- park right here and have a good time- stop in and let me know what luck you had- seems wise to watch for a bit

I agree Shadow, your last paragraph, says it all. A few things I always do and It sets well with the Land owners. "Leave all gates exactly as you found them". Do leave them open saying "I'll get it on the way out." Sometimes the way out is not the same gate. I always ask, "where are your cattle, I don't even want to go near that field/pasture." Have a good season everybody...........Bob

yea- as I watch 32 pheasants out in the plowed field

dogs and livestock- man- back in those days you'd better not have a dog that chased
