Kansas Rumors/Truths?

I will atest to the validity of timber rattlers in NE Kansas, from Maries De Cyne all the way to White Cloud. When I was a kid, an old river rat I knew caught and pickled timber rattlers and copperheads, all the way up the eastern half of Kansas, sold them to schools and tourists. I have seen him with some monsters. As far as Mountain Lions, 4 years ago, one got hit by a car and killed, on the entrance to the paseo bridge, in North Kansas City. One was also killed about the same time on I-70 east of Columbia, and one killed in west Omaha, Ne. also. All conservation agencies denied the possibility that the cats were wild, assuming they were released pets, but DNA proved otherwise! The sharp teeth, sharpened claws, bits of deer and rabbit in the gut was enough for me! Now presumed to be young males pioneering new territory. 10 years ago, we had free range reproducing elk in the Blue river drainage, between KC and Independence, ear tag proved they were tagged in Montana. now residents of the local Old Missouri Town nature compound. Amazing how resilient nature and wildlife is! P.S. Missouri now stocking Elk in the Ozarks, Wonder if they have any idea how far they travel and how minimal effect a barbed wire fence has? They like corn and alfalfa fields too!

My sisters German Shorthair can attest to the fact that the little bitty prairie rattlers will do a number on dogs. He spent a couple days at the vets in Winfield with his head swelled up about twice its normal size.

re stocking elk and timber wolves has caused all kinds of unintended consequences, people just don't get it....the landscape has changed over the years.

they don't release anything just ask the government kdwp will lie through their teeth and tell you that they are not releasing any but low and behold shoot one take it home and find out how many visitors you have it didn't happen to me someone I know they shot it out it in the truck and left it over night it had snowed a little that night they went out the next morning to study it some more and poof it was gone but their were fresh vehicle track that led right to the pickup and pulled strait out and i am fairly positive that one of the regular citizens would have known that it was there

Byrd, last year I was fishing for jackrabbits from the 14th avenue bridge. I think I would have caught some but my line kept getting tangled in the tumbleweeds.

Nice fish anyway.

You will catch more Jack rabbits trolling East Comanche, by the County Jail. It is a Jack Rabbit haven.

Yes, there are too many tumbleweeds in the stream bed, along with race horses.

Someone took the "No Fishing From Bridge" sign down.

This seems to be a "biggest liar" thread???....

My birddogs hit a track just west of Dodge, finally caught up to him about 40 miles SW of Pikes Peak...

Very nice!

BYRD, there are definitely some areas of Dodge where I could catch something if I was "trolling". It has evolved from the sleepy little tourist town that I remember from my youth back into a genuine WILD west town...

My buddy and I are going over to Elkhart the first week of Dec. Good luck and leave us a few birds. Hope to see a report from you

I found this bird last Sunday. It had been badly mauled by a bear (I believe). Any ideas what kind it is?

Byrd beat me to it! absolutely a Jayhawk. but cause of injury certainly a mauling by a tiger....... from Missouri! It's well known that the highest and best use for a Jayhawk is dinner for a higher lifeform.

Jayhawk For Dinner

Agreed, amazing similarity from the mauling the football Jayhawks received last week from the Baylor Bears!

You guys really should find a better team to pick on. At least one that can compete. They suck so bad that winning against them is no big achievement. Heck, D2 schools are beating them!

We aren't headed to Kansas until January if we see rattlers then I will be very surprised. Seriously my female had a timber rattler nestled under a laid over tree when she was a pup. It turned out to be a standoff and that seems to be the characteristic of the timber rattler they hold their ground.

We have run into a few snakes over the years, they seem to like a certain field that we avoid,if its on the warm side. One years we almost had a guy step on one, boy, can he sure jump!:)

;)

I don't see too many of them around Manhattan, but I hope to find a pile of blue and red feathers on Friday... A clear indication that a wildcat ate one for dinner Thursday night.:p

Yes, this has been my experience as well. Typically prairie rattlers will leave if you make enough noise or walk by for a second pass. Not the timbers though. They don't take any crap and you will walk around or be bitten.

Do you guys get the vaccine for your dogs, and what other precautions do you take? Just in case I come down in Nov. this year, I don't like snakes and my Springer tries to flush them he won't last long around rattlers.
