i am making my first trip to ks this weekend. its 800 miles for me just to get to the east side of the state. i would like to hunt the ne part of the state if there is any good bird hunting to be had there. i am thinking goff, marysville, vermillion, washington, clifton,or clay center.also my shorthair is ten. if the snow is deep she will not last 5 days. i will go further west if i have to. i would appreciate any info you guys could give me. thanks

If it was me and I was gonna drive 800 miles just to get to Kansas. I'm going to make sure that long of drive was worth it...I would head further west.....Good Luck

NW Kansas Better

You'll have better luck in NW than NE. NE is traditionally not that great a pheasant area. Moreover, NE has much less walk-in than NW. You can download the walk-in maps from the KDWP website. You can also purchase and print your hunting license from the site.

NE got a minimum of 8" of snow. NW just got 8" on top of about 2" left from the first winter storm.

Best of luck on you rfirst hunt in the great and hospitable state of Kansas.

Not all of Kansas is created equal. Where you might find a few birds in the NE, you can "generally" multiply that by 10 or more if you get west of say Russell. The difference between 800 and 1000 is well worth the saddle sores.

Heed this advice my friend. Once you get past to Russell, go N or S and you're in pheasant country nearly all the way to CO.

Agreed! I live in the eastern part of the state and have tried to get away with hunting pheasant without driving west and all that ends up happening is wasting a day or best luck case getting into a few quail here and there. 3 more hours on I-70 is well worth it. Good Luck and let us know how it goes.

i get the message. go west semi-young man.looks like maybe i will start out in rush county and see what happens. thanks for all your help.

Head west young man

too few bird and too much snow in NE KS...road are crappy..HEad west young man. what's another hour or so and a few gallons of gas.

Kick 'em up

try a little ferther west. Wakenney been very good this year and there are plenty of public lease available. I've been hunting around Great Bend and Southern Rush County on private and walk-in and its been moderate at best. dont know if the hard rains during the spring got that far into rush county or not

there are a few good game farms in NE Kansas tho around Topeka. I havent been but a guy I work with seems to enjoy going. Not my sorta thing personally
