Kansas 2010 UPLAND FORECAST

pheasant hunting forecast

Call me insane for doing the same thing and expecting a different result - checking the KWDP website daily for the 2010 forecast knowing it is too early for the update.

Does anyone know when the GPS walk-in maps will be available for download? And if they will be down loadable into a Garmin?

I looked at them weeks ago and I am sure I could of downloaded and printed them out. As for the gps you will have to ask another , smarter person than myself!!!!

GPS download of WIHA maps

I pestered the state staff a few years back about obtaining the WIHA information in GPS/GIS format and after talking with a number of different people I did succeed (it was obvious to me they use GIS to produce the .pdf versions of the maps). Anyway, the following year it was available to anybody to download, but last year I don't believe it was (?budget cutbacks).

D-Day Tomorrow!!!!!:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

Its the state they will find a way to mess it up I wish the damn rule books would hurry up and be out around here the wiha hasn't changed much and if it did i know where the new ones are so I dont really need the wiha book just the regs

Thanks for pointing that out. Been checking it all day and hadn't noticed. The report doesn't contain many surprises. I knew the quail in my neck of the woods were in trouble and had guessed things wouldn't be great for pheasants on much of the northern tier...at least in the center of the state. Norton and Rooks county details weren't what I'd expected.

tells me it is going to be spotty, guys will have to do your homework and sample some different spots, some of mine may be on the fringe of adversely affected areas as described, just have to go check them out....all in all, a lot like last year in many areas, not a lot better, probably not a lot worse, except for those isolated areas that got hammered.

With any luck it will leave some open WIHA in areas/counties listed. There will still be birds there for those of us willing/able to work for them. I really like spending time in a couple of the counties they listed as having been hammered and have some new access in one county they listed....their report will not deter me from re-visiting old stomping grounds nor will it deter me from new finding new ones. All in all, I think we're going to see some good #'s this season:thumbsup:

We thought numbers were down last year, so that definately isn't the news I wanted to hear for this year. We will still be there for the opener (family tradition) but I may venture out a little more this winter and discover some other areas.

Sounded a lot like last year to me--at least where we hunt. I wasn't impressed last year.

Pretty much the same as I have been hearing from folks. After following the weather as much this year as I did I can see the problem areas N. of 70. I still think it will be good in certain spots that way as those birds are resilient nesters!!!! I am sure there will be hot spots in counties that were hit hard and where the weather was better it should be better than last year!! If anyone would like to check K.B.'s post on " More Rain" it will give some light on some hard hit areas. However, I would not overlook these ares when scouting, you may be surprised!!!! Good luck everyone!!!!

Saw plenty birds with my own eyes not far across the state line in CO this evening, so I KNOW there will at least be just as many somewhere nearby on the KS side! Good luck boys - I'm startin to feel like a racehorse being held-up behind the starting-gate!!!

Should be a decent year. The forecast sounded fair to me and was not sugar-coated. We should see some pockets with good hunting if we are willing to walk a little bit. Good luck.

So it looks like to me that areas in and around Dodge City should be pretty good this year based on the forecast, hadn't heard of any major hailstorms that hit areas west of Dodge....whatcha know M.R. Byrd??

I will be going out that way again this like I have since 1996......

Late Wheat Harvest

The late wheat harvest this year in the North really helped the birds get through the nesting season. I've been seeing a ton of quail and pheasants on the roads in the evenings.

It's getting us pretty pumped up for the season this year.

Good Luck!
