Jobs

Well the wife got cut today from her teaching job for next year. I've been wanting to move south for some time now, maybe now is the time. I like Kansas and Oklahoma. Does anyone know anything about how the job market is for elementary teachers? We are looking at maybe Hays, Wichita, Oklahoma City... somewhere with a little bit of a population but not the rat-race like Minneapolis.

Any suggestions?

I'll be out lookin at jobs this upcoming year too, just graduating from Emporia State. If she hasn't checked it out yet tell her to look into the KSDE website for teaching jobs, it is www.kansasteachingjobs.com this is the official list of job openings for the state. As of right now there aren't a whole lot of jobs listed since they just changed over to a new system.

Jeff, if you want to be close to good bird hunting, Hays would be a much better target than Wichita. From Russell west would be a good line to focus on.

In Oklahoma I do know we are the one the worst states in pay for teachers, I have lived here most of my life and feel sorry for what teachers do and put up with for the money. Hunting wise I would stay north, even though I live in Oklahoma, I hunt in Kansas. Here is a link to Oklahoma teacher openings..

Good Luck,

It's tough everywhere for teachers. I'm a superintendent looking at cutting our budget 400,000-600,000 dollars thanks to our $&@()/$ legislatures. Best of luck to you guys. If I can help, let me know. For Texas jobs, go to www.tasanet.org and click on career center.

crime rate for one reason!

Hunting would be another. If you're going to enjoy KS for what it really is, stay out of the cities (just my opinion). Wichita and the surrounding area has a lot of opportunities, but a higher cost of living comes along w/ that. Wichita is the last place in KS I would want to live.

I just can't see living anywhere but the I-70 corridor w/ my kids. They like sports a bunch and need opportunity. I have access to great fishing, hunting, and opportunities for the kids. If it weren't for them, I'd move to Russell...always staying near I-70 b/c of the access it provides in terms of the outdoors...an hour from great everything hunting and fishing opportunities abound within an hour/hour and a half (to the E)

If they'd get in the right smaller school district, they would never have to see the I70 corridor. Probably wouldn't have to get more than 10 miles from the house to fill their bag. You could call me Jeff. I can expound more per minute on the phone than I can on a blog! However, you might drain me of all my knowledge in 1 minute too:)

I agree KB.

I too would stay away from Wichita, due to the hassles of a city.

Also remember, you're getting your advice from mostly people that live in fairly (to extremely) rural areas. I for instance live outside of a town of 700, and its 20 miles to a grocery store of any kind.

If my requirement was access to pheasant hunting as well as a reasonable distance to a population center for shopping, I'd look at an hour to hour and half north, northwest, or west of Wichita.

I myself would actually go further out than that. Growing up we were 2 hours from Wichita, 3 hours from Kansas City. Thats about as close as I need to be.

I dont know where you're getting your information, but one poster lives in Spring Hill, thats just as urbanized if not more so than Wichita is as KC is encapsulating it. Way too many people in NE ks for me.

As far as cost of living...again, you will pay more to live in the smaller communities away from Wichita. You may be able to find a house for less but it will be a dump. Any nice housing is in short supply and the cost goes up accordingly. Property taxes are almost always higher, gas is always higher etc. For Example, my parents lived in the Maize school district (one of the wealthier ones in the metro area, not that we were) but I lived in Holcomb (by Garden City) and paid almost as much in property taxes on a house worth half as much.

Anyways, for hunting, yes lots to do, but thats only 3 mos out of the year. The rest of the year if you are not married or have a family you may die of boredom. Not much else to do, I often filled my time driving my truck in the dry river bed but that could only entertain myself for so long but I was at a different stage in life. Not talking smack on the small towns, I like em, but in KS our outdoor activities and opportunities outside of hunting and basic fishing are fairly limited the rest of the year due to the terrain, and all the private land ownership.

If you're wife knows spanish, Im sure she'd be a shoe in for any western KS teaching job. But yes, if you move to Wichita, plan on driving 1.5-3 hours to get into good bird hunting and any chance of anyone letting you deer hunt without breaking the bank and writing a check. Wichita is getting the first Mini Cabelas. The govt just approved CID financing so Cabelas can severely limit the amount of money coming out of their pocket for the store. Disappointed the store will be so small.

Ive had my eye on Arizona, New Mexico or SE colorado for a while. Who knows I may make the jump someday. I like the desert.

Big city, high crime, rude people, hot, flat, windy ALL the time down there.

But all the resident geese... I always feel sorry for the owners of those farm fields around Wichita that are now surrounded by houses. Can't shoot the geese and they know it too...

Obviously the best place to live in Kansas is Manhattan. That's why everybody seems to be moving here. With the way the city is growing outwards, it won't be too many years before I live... IN TOWN.:eek::eek:

no way toad the best place is by far gove county small town good for kids and 10 minutes to some of the best hunting in the state there are always at least 2 houses for sale or rent and they arent dumps i don't know if they are hiring for teachers though but its a good thought
