January Gathering

Attention hunters and story tellers:

A few of us at UPH have been planning to meet up in Dodge City on January 15, 2011. Before anyone goes off about hunting with strangers and/or 25 guys, I'm letting you know that is NOT our plan.

The idea of this event is to put faces with some of the names that frequent this site regularly and swap tales from what is currently the upcoming season. Warning, this is a hard-core pheasant hunters only gathering:rolleyes:

Anyway, EVERY member of this board is invited. I suspect we'll meet at Central Station for lunch and the infamous MR Byrd can share some of the local history of a town that could easily be considered Kansas' most historic town. I simply can't wait to see the central/mountain zones sun dial.....don't know why, but that's the attraction that interests me most.......I digress.

We're planning a lunch at the least and I expect several of us will return for supper and wassail (yes, that's a word). I will probably stroll into Central station between 11 and 11:30am that morning, with a limit of roosters in the back of my truck:p

Feel free to form your hunting groups before the 15th or at lunch...doesn't matter to me. I'm not even going to try to play matchmaker for this event. If you wanna hunt w/ a group of 10, form it. If you wanna hunt alone after lunch, go for it.

Webguy tells me he's sending a UPH banner which should help everyone find the right table (not that 10 orange hats wouldn't be a good indicator, but I want a banner!). If nothing else it might get someone to ask us who we are and what we're doing.....then they may beg us to come kill some of their pesky pheasants for them:rolleyes: before we leave town.

If anyone has suggestions or concerns, feel free to air them out here. No offense, but if you're not planning on coming, please keep your suggestions under your hat. I ask all of you to keep it simple and there is absolutely no need to get heated over anything pertaining to this meet and greet.

All that having been said, it is now time for those who plan to attend to weigh in with their thoughts/suggestions/questions.

I am definately going to be there and would like to hunt with a group no larger than 10 if you have dogs great if not i am guessing there will be plenty of them

That is about when we [SIL] and me came down last year, we haven't set the date yet, we'll take this into consideration. I hunt 90% alone and 10% with SIL which is a couple of times up year and 3-4 days in KS. It is a 3 hour drive from where we were last year. So a definite maybe.

I'M IN!!! Will book a hotel nearby for a nite or two & hunt alone or with any of the flusher/retriever boys who care to join...& AMEN KB - please, Please, PLEASE dudes - let's all try to keep this thread pure/on-track & nobody go taking it off on some totally-unrelated goofy rant or tangent! If you wanna come & be sociable cool, if you don't keep your opinions to yourself & stay the H#!! away... :D

I don't do many overniters at all throughout the course of the season, mostly just long/hard/grueling day-trips out of Denver...Really lookin forward to hittin the chill-mode to wrap up the season & finally put a face to some of you UPH diehards!!! Don't get me wrong, I'll still be workin hard to scratch out a few roosters - but hopefully with the freezer & memory banks already full, not nearly so obsessed about it all as earlier in the season...

kansas britt's- think it'd be a good idea to see about places where a tent can be pitched and bird dogs staked out- maybe even a fire

I'll come- you won't take offense to one who talks to much and rambles on a bit

He might play with the flushers, if know-body bites.

Good idea on pitching tents Saturday evening. I'm sure we could find a place....but I'm not sure I want to sleep outside in January . I'm not a soldier....In fact, I am a bit of a puss!

Plan to join us Shadow. You'll see that this is a great group of people and I'm sure we'll all enjoy each other's company very much.

@Fenway - Mine don't bite or fight, but I don't want him messin up you pointermen's game! I would put him in the truck & tag along for awhile just to see the beautiful show - but take away my dog & I don't wanna bird hunt anymore! Have always had retrievers, but since I am gettin older & a C-O-L-D, WET, MUDDY duck or goose blind no longer holds the exact same appeal to me that it once did - maybe I'll get a pointer for the next dog...

I'll be there... I'd be more for making the dinner the bigger event. Lunch is cutting into my hunting time.. lol and I'm sure there will be a good deal of beer served that night. So if its just a lunch gig, i'm not to prone to sticking around to long. We'll see

will do KB- motels/hotels are nice- sort of been a camper- nothing quite like a camp with a bit of freedom

no big deal- Dodge isn't all that far
but then again- if I had a fire going, fresh coffee, couple lawn chairs- before you-all headed out to pound the fields- perhaps a stop for coffee

Actually, I'd love to hunt behind a flusher just to experience it. The ideas that could come from this could be very interesting.....hunt one field with pointers, hunt the next with flushers.....just getting the idea wheels turning here, not suggesting we design the thing around this thought, just sharing the thought.

That's fine. Skip lunch and come for supper. That's when all the good excuses will be on display anyhow. I think a few of us were considering lunch in case we decide we like one another and want to form a new hunting party for the afternoon. If you're hunting a ways from there, just plan to come for supper.

brother and his freind met me in Nebraska- Golden Retriever and Black Lab- my two pointers- we still chuckle- we're still argueing a bit on which were better-

nothing wrong with a good manered flusher in the same field with a good manered pointer- exciting yes- confusing yes- but doable- as long as not so serious

I tried my brothers Golden on Bobwhites as he let me have him for a year- didn't work- birds were to fast getting off the ground-

Looks like about six hunters and several dogs committed at this time. Expect it will grow a little as time goes along. That would be good.

KB you know round abouts where I'll be... Just me and the Lab. plan to hunt most of the day there, then head towards dodge. I wouldn't be opposed to heading down early, and getting out with a few of you guys. But with not having anywhere to go hunt turns me off... if there's some good ground we could hit in the afternoon I'd probably head down earlier.

I will probably come as well, would be nice if we could find someone with a barn to meet at after the hunt to just hang out and BS alittle, get the coleman stoves out and heat up some coffee, maybe throw up a cot, get the fart bag out and see how wild the stories get. But it probably would be hard to find a nice barn where the wind doesn't whistle through the holes in the sides of it :) Get up the following morning and do mwhat ever, head home, go to breakfast or ?
Just an idea.
