Welcome '24-'25 pheasant opener. This will be the first season my father will not be hunting, I think this has tempered my enthusiasm. Taking a couple guys out for a friend this morning, the regular crew is fading. Post those hero pics Iowa hunters! Be safe everyone, looking forward to some reports and pics. Time to get my poop in a group and head out.

Well, had my 3 in the first hour or so, the fellas I took out had some beautiful (Parker and Fox maybe?) 100 plus year old double barrel shotguns, one of them did get a bird toward the end when my knees were screaming at me to stop. If I wasn't abiding by our No-Party Hunting law, I would have had another 8 point blank opportunities. Not sure if I will have it in me to try again tomorrow, maybe by myself it would be a much shorter adventure. The dog worked decent, I found out the "dinger" in my bell was missing, I have an extra one somewhere in my gear, but couldn't locate it on a quick search, so that made keeping track of the dog 100 times harder in the 5 foot plus high cover.
My dog did find an old deer carcass that he did a nice job of rolling and rubbing on....had to jump in the shower with him first thing upon our return....way preferred to bumping into a skunk! 2024 opener.jpg

Thanks for the updates guys, unfortunately foot issues persist for me. I can hunt / walk for a bit but if I do too much I really pay for it later. I do like following along with your updates and write ups!!! I plan on adding a few this season but didn’t make it out this past weekend. Good luck to you guys this season and keep the updates coming. Kevin.

Our group of 8 shot 17 birds on public land on the opener. We had a great time! Bird numbers seemed to be similar to last year. We did see a ton of hunters, but had a very enjoyable hunt. Having all of the corn out always helps!

I hit some public Saturday at Noon to avoid the crowds and we didn't put up very many birds. I hunted the light and heavy weeds, but nothing. Some guys came in an hour after me and walked one of the cattail stands and were flushing a few. I heard some shots, but not sure if they got any. I ended up walking a different patch of cattails and one bird flushed wild. It was just too warm for the dog and me so we quit after a couple of hours.
On Sunday I went to a different public area at 8:15 and ended up with 2 birds by 10:30. I took both dogs which helped. We had around 10 flushes, mostly hens, and I got the 2 roosters we saw. Both were in or near a standing corn food plot.

Thanks. Bobcat, found will pheasant hunting, there is a half buried empty 12 ga case in there too. Mark can do about whatever you imagine or find a pic of on the net. I sourced the post, wire and grass (and 2 of the roosters) from our farms and mounted the post/wire to the base. I also picked the poses of 3 of the birds. Mark mounted the birds, built the habitat and positioned and made the 4th bird fit into the group. No buyer's remorse on this project, I will find myself walking in to see this at least once a week it seems (set in an out-of-the-way room).

Kevin,

Are you dealing with plantar fasciitis?

Kevin, have your started using inserts or switching out all your inserts with ones for plantar fasciitis? I had that going on this summer, but it is finally clearing-up.

I have tried a few different kinds. McFarmer suggested a pair and I got those. They worked for a few months then for what ever reason I couldn’t wear them. I bet I’ve tried 6 or so different ones including two pairs where my feet were mapped. None seemed to work very long. The latest shoes that have been working good but not great are Kuru ones. I am thinking this spring that I just need to bite the bullet and go see my foot doctor to see if any options for surgery exist.

Kevin, go get some molds made. Best $600 bucks you will ever spend. I had plantar fasciitis, nothing worked till I ponied up the big bucks

Unfortunately, yes.

I dealt with the same thing about 6 or 7 years ago. I did two visits to physicians and got steroid injections that did provide immediate but temporary relief.

The second physician was a podiatrist who recommended orthotics.

As I am of limited financial means, I purchase affordable shoes and use the following orthotics in all of them.

I wish you recovery soon.
