if- what would you and your dog do

If they are public land wild birds I'd haul my backside to the left and move in while half looking further to the left, as those birds are not going to stay in that cover long unless it is dawn or dusk.

And I'd hope my dogs remembered to self relocate and watch them. If they truly have a bird there I'd know it by their actions. That's the kind of cover that brings folks with extremely steady dogs who won't self-relocate to their knees. Can do that all day and never flush a bird until you get towards real cover.

If it was a pay to hunt operation I'd move casually to my left walk to right in front of the far dog's nose, and remind myself to let the bird get out a ways before I prepare my boot for the flush. :)

Ah thats the thing people don't understand, steady your dog to a hup whistle so you can stop him. And carry on. I do this on moving birds, what would a pointing dog do on a down wind runner. Any breed of dog is effective for putting birds in the bag. You just have to train them to do it the way there intended. Out in No Dak we hunted that big stuff allot.

FC, with him at 4 years old we're working on sitting on a runner. That being said, I use the tone on the e-collar because I don't do whistles when hunting. He's got A LOT of fire so it's been a process. Should have started it earlier, I know, but he's my first dog that I've trained so we're learning together.

On an earlier post you said you wanted the standing corn. You can have it my friend! It's my least favorite cover to hunt even though I know they're in there.

I'd turn around and go the other way so my lab wouldn't ruin it for you!

I was thinking heel my springer before he saw it and possibly learns a bad habit (pointing).:D Jk guys, my dog would probably be thinking "wtf don't they know there is a bird there!"

At my dogs current rate they would run in snatch the bird and bring me back another hen:mad:

FC- lots of times they leave the corn and milo cut at 18"- here you have last years- sort of a clearing- to the left stretches a 1/4 by 1/2 mile section of cut dirty milo- to the right is 1/4 by 1/2 mile

straight out you can see cut but not real dirty corn- but 1/2 mile out is dirty cut corn cut to 18"

happens to be my play area

6 hunters in two vehicles stopped- I asked them if they'd like the two roosters- specially the one they pointed as they were watching

they asked if they could get permission- ahh doubt it- we've had a few groups without written on it- farm house sits 1.5 miles out in front a bit to the left

only one group on it this year- 2nd weekend- believe they got a visit from the sherrif department

and yes- open the back end and let two out it's best to have the Garmins on and linked- they do have the tendency to really take off- sort of blowing off some steam

I agree, GREAT thread shadow!

thanks- I go out just about every other day- not that long though -pheasants are getting skittish- but heck- can't blame them

pretty close is my burr field- wore out 2 sets of boots already- so it's fun to not have to put boots on- now letting 2 out and getting boots on- what a blast- sometimes they really try me- I have to holler and even get the dog leashes out and attach to the trailer hitch- sometimes a few burrs don't bother them- they are wired up and seem to do ok on three legs- I know there's a problem when they change which leg they carry though- GET YOUR BUTTS in here- and I get on the whistles

you ought to see my beasts when I let them out- been a hard time trying to get them to pay attention- I have to be patient- let them roll- but shees- Garmin says 483 yards and still going- and I'm not even ready- coming to think they know the field

course it's corn or milo rows- they like to blast out-

but heck- they do turn- then there's the lock up- and I've not even left the vehicle- ahh- what joy- will they still have the bird- the suspense- can only wonder what they think

Shadow-

Wish I could hunt as much as you all. Sounds great.
I hunted roosters 13 days this season, and that's it. It's over.

Sorry about the terrible stuff I said to you on the pointing lab thread. Didn't mean it. All you guys on this forum sound like you'd be fun to get out hunting with.

heck- can't even remember what was said- besides- we sit here behind computers- tap these keys as we think- sometimes I should just shut up-

I moved out to this farm couple years ago- because it's pheasant country- and I've hunted the Eastern part for so long- nothing better to try just pheasants- definately different than quail- I see the fields change- birds change- and it's nice not having to drive

thanks- long season and many days yet to be afield- I'm sort of quite pleased- pups have shown they aren't run off beasts- they actually are paying attention to me- all the while no shock collar

makes me think they might make NSTRA dogs after all

these stupid jack rabbits- one pup freezes when one comes in front of him- the other pup jumps right up in the air- whines and takes off- but stops shortly- on a holler and whistle- great progress from last year-

whew- don't dare be afield with someone who shoots at a rabbit while mine are down

I got 4 superb pictures this morning- outstanding point and honor- but on jackrabbits!! I deleated the pictures

I'm looking ahead to maybe we'll get some heavy snow- want to see how things go when they lock up and a pheasant comes up from under the snow
