Hunting in the rain

Rain:eek:

Snow:thumbsup:

It would have to be raining with near-freezing temps and windy before I backed out on a hunting trip. I saw a friend's brittany nearly die of hypothermia in a situation like that. No thanks... Most rain wouldn't cause me any concern though.

But snow is the best. Nothing makes me want to go hunting as bad as seeing fresh snow. And hunting WHILE it is snowing... Well, that's just a slice of Heaven as far as I am concerned.:D

SNOW is where it's at!!!

Don't mind a little drizzle, but HATE a mudfest - unless I'm sittin or layin in chestwaders & parka in a duck blind or goose field!

The best method I've found is to strip naked and walk from the high point in the CRP down to the birds. While they are laughing about obvious shrinkage issues, I let them have it:) Let me know where you'll be hunting Chris and I'll bring my camera with the really big lens!!!

LMAO! This one caught me off guard! Thanks for posting:D

Walking in rain isn't the issue, it's trying to get around on the roads. That sand/mud mixture does not take water well at all. Not an occasion where wet and slippery is favorable;) And once it sets up on the bottom of your wagon, it doesn't like to come off. Make sure you're not borrowing the wife's ride:D

I'm heading out next friday, after the opener, and rain may be in the forecast. Do you guys hunt in the rain and if so how does your approach differ? Do you look for more shelter cover or does rain really affect the way the birds act. I've heard that some guys say it is pointless to hunt in the rain but I just can't see why that would be the case. I figure the birds will hold better and we can get closer shots. Just wondering really.

Chris

long ago used to think pointing dogs couldn't get real scent in the rain- sort of from the days in the 70's when we didn't go out in the rain

birds got to eat- sometimes they do a lot of walking in the rain instead of flying- light rain can be good for the dogs to pick up scent

one day, while on the 50 mile drive it started to rain lightly, temp was 26 degrees- slow raining as I pulled into the farm- thought heck lets go see-

2 Britt's and an English Setter started to act like they had something out in the cut milo- point, back, creep- then move out- then point, back, creep-
pretty sure we had a covey moving- big brush pile 1/4 away-

all dogs locked- stepped into the brush- quail started coming up as I raised the gun- insulated coveralls were tight- ice on the gun, iced up arms- shook and loosened up the ice- quail were still coming up- shot and reloaded my Beretta a few times- we ended up with 7 quail- called it quits and headed back to vehicle

farmer was standing under his awning- big grin- "saw you cross that field"

Goretex boots, dryplus or goretex clothing, long underwear, deerskin gloves,- about the way to go if you expect wet conditions in any kind of hunt- and a change for nice weather

Chris

I hunt in the rain. Got Gortex-lined field pants and boots. Splish splash.

Do you all think it can rain too hard? I have hunted in light to moderate rain and have done some good but one day it poured all day long and I mean poured and we had a lousy day.
