How's the cover holding up?

Now I will get to see first hand how the new habitat (food plots, warm season grasses, windbreak trees) look after a major SD winter storm. I plan to inspect by shotgun of course with dog as lead assistant. I expect that the food plots will be the honey pot. With 10" of snow and winds up to 35MPH this should be a good test.

Should have some pictues and maybe some video for ya when I get back.

Good luck and I'm looking forward to pictures when you get back!

I had lots of snow, but was happy to see that my WGF sorghum provided better cover than I thought it would. I still much prefer taller grain sorghum for future plantings though. Oddly, the pheasants were in the areas where I'd seeded taller sorghum a bit too heavy. In these areas the wind had blown it over earlier this fall, but it made a wonderful canopy.

My miserable switch grass didn't fare too well and went flat after 8"-10" of heavy wet snow, but now that it's melted the switch popped 1/2 way back up and the other various "weeds" are popping up a bit as well.

1GB, here are the pics.

This first one is the plot I got the triple out of first thing. This is looking east and I would say less than 5% of plot was drifted in. Excellent snow trap created with the high and low milo

These next 2 are looking north in a different plot and first shot is looking down the windward row where snow accumulated and drifted.

This next photo is just 12 ' to the right where there was no drifting of snow at all. I found birds liked to hang right next to drift to get out of wind and could get some heat from sun.

This next photo is a small plot looking north to the dirfted portion and then I turn around and take picture looking south.

I couldn't be happier with how these turned out this year.

Chris, Very nice! High quality food and cover.

:coolpics:uguide...you have me droolin here in kansas to hunt that..:D

If I can make it out there again this winter I will bring a video camera and see what the plots are holding and how they look in a month or 2.

I got 2 tractors in the shop and when they are done I need to get them back in the shed at the farm.

Chris, I'll be out by your place next weekend. We are headed out Thursday and coming back Sunday. If you are around on Saturday, please swing by Buffalo Butte for beers! We are headed out Thursday at 9am to Gregory County. I don't know how that county continues to tolerate us.

Ryan, I don't think the tractors will be done yet but thanks for the invite. You goin for the rabbit shoot at the OK corral again? Packin heat?

Shoot one for me, wish I could go.

Might be a day trip when i do go and could use someone to drive one of tractors back to farm from town with me. Interested? We'd have to tie one on with the locals of course before we turned around and headed for home next day.

The annual rabbit hunt is the 29th of Jan.

Yep. I'm definitely interested.
