To anyone who may read this:

My name is Stacy, I had a "friend of a friend," contact in Garden City to take me with his party, but looks like that might not pan out. Would anyone like to join me on opening weekend? I have a dog, but she's only 7 months old and I wouldn't force that on my worst enemy, so she won't be coming this year. I am looking to hunt WIHAs somewhere in a triangle from Jetmore to Garden City to Dodge City. I don't care if it's just 1 person or 15. I have hunted and fished all my life, so I know what I'm doing, I just didn't want to do it alone. If you have a dog, that would be great, but I would just really like to get a few shots during opening weekend. The last time I hunted Kansas was when I was 14 and have some GREAT memories of me and my Dad. Please let me know if you are interested, or could point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance,

Stacy

If I was you I'd come on up and bring the pup. Hunt solo and you won't half to worry about your pup making mistakes and busting birds for others. I'd hunt your pup for a while and then if you wanted to put the pup up and join another group I'm sure you wouldn't have a problem finding one as there'll be lots of hunters around. My guess is hunting solo behind your pup would be very rewarding for you (assuming he's ready to be shot over).

absolutely! Kansas GSP beat me to the punch, he is correct, get that pup out there and let him get a wild bird education, he will make plenty of mistakes, but the lessons will last a life time, take advantage of your solo time, it will be invaluable for the pup and you will be glad you took the opportunity, there will always be time to hunt with others once your pup becomes fully trained, now, get going and have fun and let him learn on his own...after all it is all about the pup!

Some of the best hunts I have ever had, have been over precocious young pups. You can see a the pieces come together in a short time, both you and the dog might have the time of your life.

Hunting Trip

Well, I think I might just give it a shot alone...the way it's beginning to look, that's gonna be my only option, hahaha. Thanks fellas,

Stacy

Stacy, don't look at it as a negative. Hunting solo with a young dog is very rewarding.

Plus, being alone, you will tend to meet many more folks that may lead to more ground to hunt or friends to be. I hit the cafes much more often when alone and chat with the locals plus the farmers driving back roads will stop to chat it up also. I have met many people and places to hunt doing this.

7 months old

hate to tell you what to do, but bring that dog...will be the best thing for it. My 2 brits were hunting b4 they were 6 mos old and my buddys shorthair pointed her first pheasant at 5 1/2 mos.. get them to love birds early

I agree with everyone else's comments, I have a 10 month old GSP that I'll be taking with me, while I will be hunting with a group its still great to get the dogs around the birds at a young age.

Yea, you guys are right...I have to bring her...I love her more than my wife, and she wouldn't ever forgive me if I didn't! Hahaha, I think I need help! Thanks guys!

I have a 7 month old GSP. VERY instinctual and a GREAT nose, but I haven't had as much time as I'd like to spend with her. She still has a lot of pup in her, but I'm thinking if I start with a 50 to 75ft. check cord on her, she'll probably figure it out pretty quick. That's all I'm really scared of with her is that she'll take off the second we get out there and she gets some scent in her nose.
