The Pheasant Fest - Quail Classic was awesome in my opinion. It was my first and I went for the seminars and I was in one of them every hour they were open and that did not provide me with the opportunity to attend all I wanted. Found the seminars to be very informative. Met some of the Farm Bill Biologist(FBB) that our Kansas Grassroots efforts helped to put on the ground. Met a USFWS biologist that is involved with the Lesser Prairie Chicken Initiative(LPCI).
Yesterday, two FBB, one USFWS biologist, one NRCS supervisor were at the ranch and I signed the application to enter my grass land in the LPCI. Next week a NRCS range land specialist, a FBB and a KDWPT biologist will be at the ranch to continue evaluating present LPC habitat and improvements that could be made. Today I had the good fortune of kicking out a couple LPC and talked to a neighbor that has a good number. Last year I missed the dance because of cancer surgery, I hope this year there will be a dance and I can be the guest of honor.
I do have existing CRP acres that will expire in September. The Pheasant Fest and the follow up by FBB will, hopefully, maximize the chances of getting the EBI high enough to re-enroll the existing acres and with improvements that will benefit the species I manage for, Lesser Prairie Chicken, Bobwhite quail, Pheasant, Rio turkey, Whitetail Deer and Mule Deer.
An additional perk was spend some time with UGIDE and Mrs. UGUIDE and Deadbird.
