How much company do you like when hunting?

I am usually a very solitary type hunter. One guy, and one or two dogs.

Even when I have a couple guys with me, I still drive alone, and dont hunt as a group, but more like individuals in a field, opting to work independently of each other, but in conjunction with one another.

I always drive alone, because in my truck is 2 shotguns, 2 dogs, food, water, provisions, a rifle, calling equipment for coyotes, and depending on the time of year, (like last week) there may be a muzzleloader along. I dont have room for any other passengers.

I understand how effective a large group can be, especially this time of the year, but still, I opt to hunt alone.

There is never any discussion about who's going where. Who hunted where, How many birds do we have total... or how many birds do we need to fill.

How many guys hunt alone, or with a group of 4, or a group of 10, or a larger group.

What is your preference, and why?

I like to hunt alone or in a small group of 2-4 people.
I am not a big fan of large groups driving pheasants, not that there is anything wrong with that, I just have more fun when its a more pointing dog dependent hunt.

This was from a hunt with my son and my setter. Lots of grass and just us and the dog.

I'd prefer it be just the dog and I... I try and do that as many times as possible during the season. I do take my Dad whenever he can get away, and a buddy or 2 a couple times a year.

Just me and my 4 legged pal with a friend once in a while.

That would also be my preference .

I agree

I like to hunt alone or with one or max two others. I laugh at all the"outdoor writers" that say one hunter shouldn't try and hunt big blocks of cover. What they forget is I can hunt silent and at the speed the dog wants to go and I am only looking for 3 roosters not 60 like their big groups. :D

I prefer to hunt with the two four leggers. They don't tell anyone that I can't shoot. And I can brag to y'all about how good my dogs are,and no one can dispute it.

I was thinking the same thing....that way after the hunt, the dog hunted a bit better, the shots were a lot tougher, and the birds were alot willyer!!! and nobody can say squat about it:)

My feelings exactly.

I usually hunt 3-5 guys and that is a very comfortable number for me.

The invite everybody from church, march down a field, with blockers at the end shtick is not for me... Honestly It kinda turns my stomach. I especially hate the pic with 20 guys who "all limited out" yeah... I bet you did, I am sure nobody shot an extra one for the one guy in the group who can't shoot and is carrying a JC Higgins single shot 12 with a full choke and only hunts once every three years. Ask me later and I will tell you how I really feel.

1 or 2. Mostly me and my one brother and our dogs. We grew up doing this alot and the banter back and forth is much more important then limiting out. As we are both around 60 any time we spend together becomes that much more important.

I probably have the most success going solo with the dog(s), but have more fun when I team up with a friend or two. There is a lot of windshield time and hotel time, and food breaks... I like to pass that time BSing with good friends.

I usually hunt alone with the labs because I enjoy the time in the field working and besides, I am still learning how to hunt these critters and so I often have some hare-brained scheme nobody else would want to try anyway...

If I ever screw up the courage to ask permission to hunt private land, I guess being a solo hunter might give me a better chance than showing up with a small army.

Of course, having never really hunted wild birds in a group, I can't say if that is better than what I do now. Good topic, guys. Thanks.

I like to hunt alone, with my 2 sons, and with a group of 10 friends. Hunting is what you make it. I like the solitude and the connectivity with the dog hunting alone. I like family bonding with my sons and the friendship hunting in small groups. Each has its own rewards. If I have to pick one, its with my two sons and my dogs.

Gus the Brittany and one to three old friends.

I've hunted by myself and with up to 16 or so in a group. Fun for me both ways. I'm hunting and not focused on what others are doing with the exception of safety.

However, a day in the canyon hunting quail with my GSP's Taz and Ike is hard to beat.

I like to hunt with no more than 6 people. I have hunted by myself some but really prefer a person or two to share the experience with. The only hunting I haven't done is the 20 person group thing as I don't think I could handle that. For me, it is as much about comraderie and bantering as anything else. I love the feeling of being "alive" on the cold days and watching the dogs do what they were put here to do. Like someone else said, hunting is what you make of it.
