How many pheasants, and quail will hunters harvest in Kansas this year?

I wouldn't be surprised if less than 100,000 pheasants are shot. I haven't heard a good report this year. Hunted all day yesterday and never saw a bird. I don't know if there are more than that total in the whole state!!!

I think there will be more than 150,000 quail harvested. Most hunters are concentrating on quail now, with the roosters in low supply. But I hope not for the quail. Pheasant hunters need to practice quail stewardship The quail are more equipped for the climate we have been dealt. But we need some more seed stock! I assume harvest totals will be at around 500,000 quail. With the what happened to Iowa, around 400,000-500,000 might be right for pheasants. A lot of people won't go back, heck a lot of people didn't go back after Thanksgiving in good years, let alone go back after the first of the year.

I can't even find any quail when I go. I've never found a covey N or NW in Kansas! When I do find a covey I won't fire a shot, just use the covey and the singles for dog work and I wouldn't even do that close to sundown.

kansas road kill

actually, guys i haven't hunted a lot of hours this year but have hunted parts of 7 days in the field, getting old, use two gps's, am at 21 birds, pheasants, and am averaging a bird shot about every 50 mi. not great, not meant to hurt your feelings but there are some birds out there, mostly you won't find very many in the cafes

Two years ago hunting parties I was part of took around a 200 birds. Moslty pheasants. Last year the total was a little under 100 but no trips west of Harper, Kansas. Most years I make 3-5 trips for day hunts in western Kansas. This year after a month of hunting we have 31 birds (21 pheasants 10 quail) & not one trip out of the sight of the Wellington grain silos yet. All my hunting buddies north and west say they have not seen any birds so they are not hunting.

I hope that my solo hunt Saturday is rained out.

birds are there

one thing about hunting alone this year is that i don't have to share any birds. i can hog em' all. actually not seeing a lot of them but nearly every field i hunt i find a few and sometimes a flock. i hunt the same lands that ya all do, no inside track. what it means, don't know, i have been hunting kansas from st. francis to norton for about 35 or more years, last year the kill dropped statewide from about 750000 i think to about 450000 or whatever. last year was the finest pheasant hunting of my life, i shot 96 roosters and no day did i have to hunt more that 4 hours, can't explain it all as the reports do not indicate the same results i was getting, i also don't think i am much smarter than the rest of you but i go to hunt and that i do, no standing around b.s.ing for me, headed out again on sunday, mostly for turkey but will take one dog this time instead of the usual two and no i am not just giving the pheasants a break, they will however need one if we will have anything to hunt next year

cheers

You are quite the hunter indeed my only question is if the birds dont appear to be in the cafes do you think that they would be in the kind of bars that you drop dollar bills in g-strings???

only a pointer

to answer this guys question as to birds not being in a cafe but maybe a bar that has g-stings attached! well folks this is pheasant forum and not a beaver forum, nuff said on that, ya just gotta decide whether ya wanta hunt pheasants or beaver, your choice

cheers

I went out to Jackson Co. for a few hours two weeks ago and didn't even see bird poop let alone a bird...starting to think that pheasant/quail in KS are becoming an endangered species! The last three years have been very very disappointing here in NE KS. Pheasants have been sparse for years but quail were always ok, now no quail either :(

bird harvest

i am betting that the pheasant harvest will by as published by the fish and game to be 275000 birds, the quail will come in right at 450000 birds. while the quail pop. is likely up, the number of hunters in the field is likely to plummet do to poor pheasant conditions even though both birds don't need the same things. both will show a large drop, the pheasant kill i think a couple of years ago was nearly 800000, wow!

I am somewhere around 15 pheasant and 2 quail. Went west today and got three. Actually saw 9 hens in one crp field and around the same in the second. The birds are bunched up today.

Uh Mr. Braggard... If you shot 96 roosters last year you were totally over the limit and are not a hunter but a poacher there guy! Wow what an arrogant SOB... Maybe time to re-evaluate your priorities in life. Hope the local conservation officer nails you there and soon!

pheasant limits

some people just don't know when to stop running their mouth or the facts get lost in their whatever size brain they have. the law says a possession limit in kansas of 16 birds, nowhere does it say how many a person can shoot over the length of a season nor does it say ya can't hunt ne. co, or wy, all just a short drive, maybe if you learned to hunt you wouldn't feel so left out but then maybe you wouldn't know the difference
