How do you treat/take care of your dogs while hunting

I have always fed my dog some in the morning before hunting. Like to do it an hour or two before we start hunting. I also like to give him a little something part way through the day.

The amount of energy they go through is large. and it they are wet and cold it is even greater.

FC- I took your advice and haven't fed the Grace before one hunt this year (Just lots the night before). She hasn't thrown up once yet.

Thanks for your intelligent insight and suggestions.

Glad it worked out for you. I just won't feed any other way any more. If nothing else happens, I always have loose stool trouble with dogs running with food in there guts. Good food sustains them all day with plenty of fresh water. Every one has ideas, but I have tried them all in 30 years and find this to be the best basic plan out there. (with good food). Good luck hunting.:10sign:

wow i must be the only one on here that carries a dog in the back of truck in the dog box and they sleep in it at night to no matter how cold i guarantee im not letting hair fly everywhere in my truck let alone the smell and i promise there not sleeping in bed with me or in the motel room am i the only one that thinks this way lol

I don't have that problem, Setters don't stink :p:D

But I have to admit that my dog is pretty spoiled.
I tend to feed a small meal a couple hours before the hunt. I think it really help if you have the dog hunting all day.

No, I do the same thing. If the weather isn't to cold outside at night, I usually let them sleep in their crate/kennel. Now my older lab I will keep him in the room because my son insists, however I don't like a bunch of stinky, hairy labs in my room after I have taken a shower.

I don't disparage guys who have one dog and one dog only. However if you have more than one, well that is different.

I do feed somesort of protein snack in the morning and alot of water. However I have been hunting pheasants, ducks and geese now with labs since 1992 and I have always fed them my dogs in the evening after the hunt is over and lots and lots of water then and during the day.

I also think that dogs are actually safer in a dog box/kennel while traveling than inside the cab of a vehichle. Does anyone have any data to back up whether that is true or not?

Greg

For those that have stated they let the dog ride in the cab with them, do you have some type of a restraint system for the dog? I don't, so my dog rides in an aluminum box in the back of the truck. I feel gives him the best chance for survival, if an accident were to occur.

I've seen some seat belt type restaints in magazines but never really thought much about them, is this what some of you use?

Feeding question? For those feeding only at night, is that only during days spent hunting or training? or is that their feed time 24/7? I may switch over to that method.

Thanks,

Thanks,

Lots of posts in old threads pertaining to feeding around heavy conditioning periods. Just do a quick search and I suspect you'll find what you're looking for:thumbsup:

The day before a day afield I feed my dog in the evening only -- all he wants to eat. All he wants in the evening after a day afield too. Non-hunt days he's on a ration, half in the a.m., half in the p.m.

OK, pretty much what I've been doing.

Thanks and take care.
