How did everyone do this season?

OK, I will go philsophical. It was great....not in the number of birds shot or found but just getting out with my dog and hunting friends. Sometime just the discussions and opposing views in the vehicle during the drive out or back makes the day. I love the silence and vastness of the plains and respect those who make a living off of it. As I think it is more difficult than what us City folk do. In closing I did shoot a rooster on the last walk through the last field on last day of the season at sunset. It is always special to have that heft in the game pouch on the walk back to the truck at sunset. So here is to rain/snow, green fields, high cover, dogs who run forever, birds who hold tight and waking up vertical in 2013/2014.

Sdt hit my view on the head. Shot 2 roosters opening weekend. Met GCB. Spent time with 77year old dad and 10 year old son. Knee surgery four days before season opener. How could it have been any better? Oh ya had a young pup of the boys retrieve a rooster. Like to of seen more birds but hell I said that after great seasons.

Good post:cheers:

I shot exactly ONE Quail and one Jake turkey..no roosters, chickens, deer, rabbits, squirrels.

2012 SEASON SUCKED ..That is all!

Bud, that is awful. But hey, you shot more quail than I did.:D I was just so stinking happy to see some quail this season I let 'em all fly. Hopefully you will have some success on that big buck you're after next season.

I'm oddly looking forward to next season though. I don't know why, but I feel like 2013 may be the year of the Toad.

1. Nebraska opener: 1 pheasant

2. Kansas opener: 1 pheasant

3. SD in December: 1 pheasant

That sort of sums up the season, but I did get a few more birds in Kansas through the season. The best hunting was the last two days of the Kansas season which started with a cold front and 3" of fresh snow. Came back with a quail and five pheasants. Those great conditions allowed the dog to work in dust free cover with plenty of scent.

me again

without getting tears in the eye's about this past season which for me was quite good, the highlight i guess was pastor john. got a guy hooked i did. on mar. 22nd. he drives to colby to pick a brand new buddy and is he excited, got a bird pen planned but confused as to whether he wants a bunch of pheasants or chukar. think chukar are an easier way to go but never raised either. of course he also picked the RIGHT kinda puppy, smart guy that pastor john. hope you guy's out there appreciate all the praying i am having him do cause it seems to be working

cheers

Don't get me wrong I am not out there just for the kill or body counts. If I was I would not bow hunt, plant food plots and trees. I was representing my season as a whole. I think the weather, cover and other factors in my year caused by sentiment. I spent a lot of time out a field and just didn't see the game or the habitat. Also as a new landowner I would have liked to make a little something of my crops that didn't head out due to lack of rain. It also is very fustrating having 3 dogs and no birds to hunt.

The only good out of the 2012 season was my youngest son's first Gobbler and Buck were taken.

Going to a land auction with my buddy this evening. He is bidding on another farm of 120 acres. I am interested to see how high the bidding gets. It is good bottom ground by perry lake.

Used to be a few pheasant round that lake.

There was a time the bird opener was well attended by perry lake. Shot more than a few roosters there throughout the years. Not many around now.

Yeah I used to hunt roosters in Jeff Co. 20 years ago and would always bag a couple. My first rooster ever shot was there on a snowy Jan afternoon in 1990. I did see one rooster there last summer when fishing.

BTW... The 120 acres when for 2700.00 per ac. at auction last night.

Worst part is it averages 115 bushels per acre in corn and new owner plan to farm fence to fence:mad:

My season, much like everyone elses was pretty rough. Killed the fewest number of roosters ever (maybe 10), but still went almost every weekend and still enjoyed being out there. Did manage to shoot 4 deer this year and had my kids with me for 3 of them. The pheasant hunting was so poor I went goose hunting for the first time ever and ended up going 3 times. It was pretty darn fun and I didn't half to drive very far to get into birds which was nice. Did get into quite a few quail in Southcentral Kansas which was also nice, but they don't get my blood pumping quite like a rooster pheasant! So far, moisture doesn't look to bad for the Spring. I hope and pray for better days. Felt bad for the birddog this past season. Looking forward to Spring turkey!

I saw a rooster on leavenworth road a couple of years ago at about 150th. Flushed right next to the truck. Also saw a couple on the road south of leavenworth 5 years ago or so. There was a guy here releasing 100 or so a year trying to get them established. I imagine those were some of his

At today's prices he'll gross a bit over $100k on corn crop. With a $324k purchase price, gonna take a while to recoup.

With 115 yield and 5.50 new crop price, which is where new crop is trading, he would gross around 75,000. If he is farming it himself that around 20k profit. Thats around 6 percent return. I watch a lot of ground sell, and thats actually a pretty good buy for that area and the price. I have seen quite a bit of dryland in western Kansas bringing that.
