Hot Weather = Doves

It's hot again and staying that way at least through Thursday, the dove opener. The doves should be sticking around with no cool weather yet to push them south.

I've heard rumor of a cold front arriving on Labor Day. Get 'em while it's hot men:thumbsup: Get 'em early, get 'em late, or stay in the shade and stay hydrated!

#9s in the Improved barrel, #8s in the Skeet barrel on my new 28 guage Ruger. In less than 12 hours theory finally gets put to practice. We'll see how it goes. It's my dog's first hunt, too.

Everything considered, I'll take a warm opening day morning with light wind and clear sky over a 55 degree early September gray afternoon with stiff north wind and spitting rain -- which happened to me and a buddy once in the late 60s or early 70s when we hunted the north edge of a dove roost. Hundreds of incoming sizzling past at Warp Factor 8. We can both shoot, but still the doves did a Hunter Beatdown on us that evening.

Good luck everybody. Everybody take a deep breath and repeat after me:

"Let 'em get in close. Make it be easier."

You should post more often:cheers:

Make sure your dogs get some water. Supposed to be 100 plus out there tomorrow!

No doubt. I'm expecting to get back in the truck around 9am. I don't think I'll worry about an evening feeding spot. I'll be looking for a roost and hunting the last 30 legal minutes.

Are you hunting close to home V-John?

Yes, Vj, I'm taking plenty of water for my pooch and myself. We'll be out of the field tomorrow morning long before it gets seriously hot.

Probably not hunting in the afternoon. And if I do back go out the dog stays home, safe from the heat.

Yeah, HOT! I think my old dog will wait until Friday. 100+ is a good day for the dogs to lay in a creek, not be running around with a mouth full of feathers.

Please be careful for those of you who get out on opening day. Don't kill 'em all.;)

Top of the mornin' to ya gents:) Baby boy is still sleeping but will soon be woke and shuffled out to the truck. No school for him today, he's gettin' something today that the school just can't give him. Looks like we got till 9 before it gets much over 80. I guess the afternoon will be spent in the cabin or if I'm feeling adventurous, I may endure the heat to wet a line.

I'll leave a few for ya Toad:D

Its 8 am and I see no reports of limits yet. Work is over-rated.

Well, that's b/c it took me 20 minutes to drive home and another 20 to clean birds!.

KB to Cheesy & fellow UPH'rs, over....(static).... reporting a limit in the fridge at 8:37am  I would also like to publicly announce that I beat you back Joe:D.....I'm sure you're waiting on one of those young men of yours to find your downed birds.

Highlights of the day include Duke dog and the 6yo teaming up to retrieve multiple birds and a first shot of the fall kill. An added, unexpected bonus was a very friendly KDWP officer and a group of other hunters having a good time. Probably 10 out of 30-40 guys were in their trucks within one hour of legal shooting time. The poor fella next to me was well into his 4th box of shells and had 5 in the bag. KDWP did a great job with this relatively small parcel of public land:thumbsup:

Are all of you other KC folks going down to Hillsdale to shoot or do you have connections with other land?

Sorry Chad,
Had to go to a crosscountry race after the morning shoot. It took me a little longer to get mine, but Brad and I managed to shoot a couple.Taking Garrett out this PM. Going to be hot,but he doesn't care, wants to shoot.
Got to love it.

Good to hear the doves are flowing through NE KS. My new browning gets here tomorrow, and will likely be screaming to be shot at something by the time I pick it up!
