HELP, need birds!

Hi fellow Kansans,
I just heard that my regular source for pheasants in Clay Center is sold out, and I'm not sure whether or not he's getting any more this season.

I had an arrangement worked out with him where he would sell me a certain number of pheasants in a box and then I would go plant them myself on his CSA and use them for dog training.

Well... it looks like I may need to figure out a new arrangement if I'm going to be running my pup on bought birds. If anybody could please post or PM me with suggestions of where to go I would appreciate it. The closer to Manhattan, the better. I would prefer to use pheasants for training, but I guess I could make do with a chukar or quail.

If it helps... I pay cash, I follow every rule to the letter, and I leave a place nicer than I found it.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Toad,

Are you talking about the McNeil Game Farm on 24? If not, give him a try - however, it seems his pens are always empty when I drive by, and is likely who you speak of.

Try Muddy Creek Game Birds in Meriden (north of Topeka). Andy, the owner, is a pretty good guy. He typically has decent prices, and I believe he will sell birds outright, and/or has a CSA.

Call Rod Zohn at Kansas Creek Gamebirds.

rumor has it that there is/will be a national shortage on pen raised birds for 2012.

I don't think it's a rumor. I think it's the facts, especially for pheasants.

Actually, I have heard it is also true for quail and chukars. I have not heard the reason why though. Anybody?

I think most of it has to do with the dramatic decline in pheasant numbers in South Dakota and surrounding states. All the available pheasants got used up. So with no pheasants available guys have had to resort to chukars and quail or trials, training, etc.

That would be the case in my area. I picked up 10 pheasants in early december and my guy was about out. He ran out of quail last week before I could get any.

The gentleman V-john is referring to has some great flyers for a reasonable price. I chose to buy 50 quail instead of 15 pheasants. That bunch last us the better part of a day. 15 were left out there for the guy that owns the property so he and his dog got some work out of that purchase as well.

seems strange that sodak would have such an impact on libbys, given that all their birds are wild... ;)

Yea I know for a fact, I have seen them driving down the highway throwing them out of the back of a semi during the season. One time we happened by behind the stocking truck. Man what a hunt. I never even got out of the truck. Hit them with a ball bat, and sent the dog out to pickem up. Wish I had a couple more guys. Got our 2 man limit in about 10 minutes. Saw they had a job posting for throwers on the SDWP website;)

It was McNeil game farm that I had been using.
The big advantage of them was that I could buy 3 or 4 at a time, and use them right away. I wouldn't know what to do with 15 pheasants or 50 quail.

However, if you have a source for with a 15 pheasant minimum, I would be glad to split that 2, 3, 4, even 5 ways if anybody else is interested. And I would do it multiple times too. I would prefer not to house the birds long-term.

VJohn, i would consider quail if I can't get pheasants. Please Pm me any info you have on prices, quantities, and contact info.

Thanks everybody for the leads. I will follow up on those.

Only thing you should ever sauce is pulled pork! Sauce on the side for everything else.

If it wasn't 14 degrees out, I'd have the smoker going now...
