What do I do? I am a part time breeder of Golden Retrievers and I love to provide quality puppies to good homes. I have a list of people waiting for puppies and my female just came into season last weekend! So that means she has puppies the end of Oct. and the puppies go home the middle of Dec. That means I don't have a hunting dog for the season. What do I do? I am committed to having this litter now and I have put some of my buyers off for over a year and a half! But how do I hunt without a dog? Anybody got a spare dog around this fall they want to borrow to me? I do have a few buddies with dogs and some of my past clients with dogs, but it is not the same as hunting with your own dog! Anybody else ever been in this predicament? What did you do?

Don't breed her.

There's only a limited time in your life that you will be able to hunt.

Spend it carefully.

Best wishes on your decision.

Breeding question

Estrus about every six months under normal conditions. She should come into season again in Jan. You could wait until that time. Hopefully she will follow a regular time for the next period.

im in same boat breed my girl and loose most my pheasant season but theres always late season ne/ks??? or breed my girl in jan and miss most the spring turkey season my true passion??? ill probably breed in jan i assume if she stay on her 6 mo cycle...

simply put if u want the $ and dont care about hunting the dog breed her??? if u want to hunt like u seem to wait till next go round i waited 6+ mo 4 my dog was prepaired to wait 4 more months if u know what u want its worth the wait???

Yea guys my problem is her last heat cycle was in November! So November till August is a crazy long time. It seems to me that right after a litter they are in the 6 month cycle but I like to give them at least a year off so then their cycles tend to stretch out. I am all set with the stud dog now so I think I am going down this path. Probably kill myself this fall and in the years to come but I also get to keep a pup out of this litter so I should be ready to hunt with two dogs again next fall!

In the short term you are screwed!!! Fix the long term and get more dogs. Seriously, you are in a tough spot, only you can answer
