I had some help from the moderators posting photos( one of my first posts) and was reminded then I should introduce myself. Currently I am the proud owner/trainer of two Boykin Spaniels. I have attended a few Pheasant Fest events and hope that someday the Fest will come to my home state of South Dakota. I always liked upland hunting, as a child riding with my dad scanning the fields for the birds and as adult, hanging out with the in-laws on some prime South Dakota pheasant ground. A few years back I decided to get out of driving the hunting party truck by being the much needed dog handler. I decided on the South Carolina state dog; Boykin Spaniel and haven't been sorry. I just attended the local Pheasant Forever banquet for the first time. I couldn't afford to bid very high on some of the items but was glad to see that a lot of money was being raised. I'm adding a photo of my son Lane; a couple of years ago; with my dog Wyatt.

Welcome to the site from another South Dakotan. Where in SD are you located? If you go to your Profile you can indicate where you are from and it will show up on your posts.

Cool dog. Are boykins always one color. A stray I took in was identified by the vet as a britt. She does have britt colors(dark brown with some white). However, she looks like your dog. She gets three haircuts a year. If I didn't buzz her, she would be a giant fur ball. She only has a hint of a tail.

Crossing shot Yes the Boykin Spaniels are always brown. Size and hair coat varies a bit by breeder and bloodline but both of mine are about 30 pounds.

I have 2 Britts. One orange/white with a short flat coat that never needs trimming. The other liver/white (as you describe your dog) but her coat is also quite fuzzy. I have to trim her at least 3 times a year. My guess is you have a liver/white Brittany. As far as the color of a Boykin the following was taken from the BoykinSpaniel.org web site.

The color is a solid, rich liver (reddish brown) or dark chocolate allowing for a small, white spot on the chest. No other white markings are allowed.

My hairy britt is 12 years old. I expect her to hunt 3 days a week. Cannot expect that next year. Time to plan for a replacement. She is my close working britt.

Would a Boykin be considered a close working breed?

Thanks.

:) I had to smile at your last post Crossing. My Wyatt has a bad habit; at least it is bad for a flushing breed in AKC tests; he points! Comes from a training habit and the fact this breed has a "hesitant" flush. I read my dog, he points, when I'm ready I tell him get it. Failed the test for talking to my dog.

Welcome and thanks for the pictures! The Boykin is a fine breed of dog.
