SIOUX FALLS, SD - The federal government is providing up to $30 million for landowner programs in 11 states meant to protect sage grouse populations and their habitat.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture will have $300,000 available in South Dakota that farmers and ranchers can use to improve habitat or reduce threats to the population.

Sage grouse are found in a few western South Dakota counties, but the population is so small that hunting is limited to two counties and hunters are allowed only one grouse during a two-day season. A survey by the state Game, Fish and Parks Department found that only seven grouse were shot by hunters in 2009.

this will be good.. if only they dont abuse it like they do with CRP.. what i mean by that is give farmers or landowners the lowest pay per acre. give them decent money, they will do it and you'll have numbers of landowners wanting to do this.

however, 300,000 is going to SD, which IS NOT ENOUGH!!! spraying weeds and seeds for planting will cost more than that depending on how many acres are going to be involved in this program.

Sage grouse don't need much more than good expanses of sage land. They will probably just limited grazing in the sage lands. I hope they send some of that money to California because our sage grouse population is in need of help.
