Get together

There are several guys on here from Colorado and with season almost over I was wondering if anyone would like to get together for some sporting clays shooting in the morning one day than afterwards we could go out for lunch somewhere and see who can tell the biggest wild story. Just an idea. When I was with Pikes Peal Pheasants forever we would do this with a decent turn out.

Sounds good to me - Lord knows I could use a little practice on the clays, given all the roosters that got away this year...

Sounds great I would be interested, anything to help me get better for next season!!

You all have to come up here near Ft Collins..

Sounds fun, I will be down there tomorrow at bearpoint kennels in larkspur getting my dogs dna takin to find a pointing gene in Labs.

I was thinking about Quail Run Sporting Clays as it is centrally located between Colorado Springs and Denver in Kiowa but am open to suggestions. Is there a range up therein Ft. Collins?

Just keep it there, You guys should go out to rocky mountain roosters and all get some birds!!!

Yes there is a club up here about 4 miles from my house:D Great Guns is 1 mile east of NUN, off of highway 85. They have a nice sporting clays set up and some good fields for an extended bird season

Yep, know the guy! He gave us hats a few yrs. back at a NSTRA trial. (Great Guns) as for Bear Point kennel...... I hunted with one of his pup's this yr. and it was the first lab I've ever seen with a GPS :D He needed some training but he was/is a nice black S.O.B.

Count me in - as long as I have enough advance notice & don't happen to be out of the country somewhere!

'Kiowa Creek' in Bennett off I-70 is another option (I am a member there) - they have a sporting clays course, very reasonable released-bird hunt prices & fields for training, + a really nice lodge to hang out in for the lunch & bull-shoot session...but I'm cool with Quail Run or wherever!

I will be at Vallhala this Saturday,

HHR how do you like Kiowa Creek I was on their site this morning because I am looking for a club to join you know I need the work :)and I am finding it harder and harder to find a decent place to train the pup anyways just wondering your thoughts on KC.

Recon, I like Kiowa Creek just fine because it's one of the closest in to Denver for me (although there is a cluster of several other places in that same general area) - the bldg facilities were hands-down the nicest I've seen for taking along an occasional out-of-town guest + they have individual training fields for private reservation (two people max together allowed) with very reasonably-priced birds to release myself one or two at a time (which is what I'm after more than a release-"hunt") - it is also about the most economically priced membership that I have found & they are the ONLY place I have ever seen that offers a FREE one-hour dog training session with one of their pros for new members...Works great for me, especially as relatively little as I'm gonna be able to utilize it with everything else non-dog-or-hunting-related currently going on in my life! The sporting clays course seems to be pretty popular with a whole LOT of people gauging from the filled parking lot on some days, though I have never actually done it myself (since I've already been one shot away from 3-for-3 five times this year--LOL)!!!

It all depends on what you want...You can spend as much as you would like (there is one exclusive place that is several G's per year w/an even heftier one-time initiation fee--personally, I avoid those kind of places like the plague)...Valhalla or some of the others might offer you far more in the way of professional dog training (especially with a pointer), but I'm a cheapskate do-it-yourselfer - can't afford the rest...I think it does help for several guys to belong to the same club to be able to train together without costing whoever is the outsider an arm & a leg!

BTW, is anybody else going to the the DENVER PHEASANTS FOREVER BANQUET this Sat nite, Feb 20th??? If so, I'll see you boys there!!!

I was just reading Kiowa Creeks website, and if I read it right you have to be babysat by one of their guides even with your own dog. Is that really true? If it is, whats up with that?

@jlmatthew--Yeah, I forgot about that part! These days it's all about possible litigation for everyone & making sure their backside is covered...

Bugged me too at first & I had questions also. But I have been out to train twice & all the guy did was escort me to the field, drop off the birds & leave...Don't know exactly how it works on a release-hunt (haven't done one yet), but they are really nice people & I don't think it would be much of a problem. Actually, it's kind of nice having someone else to plant the birds & help familiarize with lay of the land. I actually bummed one of their guys once for a few minutes to concentrate on shooting a couple of the planted birds for me, so I could focus all my attention on the dog work (NICE)! :)

Clubs

I belong to Kiowa Creek but have used Quail Runs facilities also so here is my two-bits worth:

Quail Run has the most realistic hunting with planted birds, if you request the river bottom field. It has grass, trees, swamp, planted rows, just about every upland bird hunting situation. It was a great pre-season warm-up.

Kiowa Creek: I agree with Hen Hen it does have a very nice clubhouse and the sporting clays are the most fun that I shot been at. There fields are ok and they are very helpfull with dog training.

If you have a pointer or setter there is the Colorado Gun Dog Club (which I also belong to) which is located in Strasberg (Just past Bennett). They have fields for dog training and run dog trials, for novice up to competative. They also have a "Johnny House" with 10 quail in it. In short for $25/total you release 7 of the 10 quial into the field get your dog out of the truck and hunt/train. You can shoot a couple if you want and the rest are called back to the house by the quail still in the house. The Clubs mission is to train the owner and they are very helpful in assisting you with you dog. They have a web site if interested.

Thats what I know.

Hey, whatever happened to this little 'CO Boys' get-together??? Seems like the idea kind of fizzled out a little...Anybody still up for it?

Weekends are full for me getting dogs ready for hunt tests.:)

I guess what we need to do is see when everyone is free to go and what place the most would be willing to go to. email me when and where you would like to go and I will take this info and go from there.
