JonnyB (Jon age 86) and Dakotazeb (George age 78) got together for a SW Minnesota hunt today. We saw a few birds but no roosters within shooting range. I hadn't seen jonnyB in several years so it was nice to see him again and also meet his wife. We will have to make this an annual event going forward.1000000792.jpg

Good for you guys. Next year if you want to, any time after Thanksgiving, you can do it here. You both have hunted here before.

Sort of an odd name for a Golden, isn't it? Kind of a negative ring...
Yes,but I use it as a badge of honor. The black lab people would always have negative comments about our dogs at hunt tests. Now not so much. When I leave the line after a success I will comment to some of the older black lab people how I now need to go blow dry my dog. Something they used to rib me about.

Doesn't "swamp collie" reinforce the Lab folks opinion? Not a very respectful name/identity...

Might be a local thing. When we formed our Golden club in Alaska and were coming up with a name Midnight Sun Swamp Collies was a top contender. I think it is a good natured ribbing. Today in some venues in AK Goldens outnumber Labs. Might be an Alaskan thing, all dog people in AK know what a swamp collie is, today it is a leggy dark Golden field bred and boy are there some great dogs. Our terms just like the lower 48 is called “outside” and Alaskan all know what outside means. As in we don’t give a damn how they do it outside.

You need to load the boys up and bring them on a field trip down here, I have a great location for blockers that needs very little walking to get to.

It’s a common term used in the field trial world and as you mentioned it’s seems like it’s used by golden owners themselves. I suspect you are correct in that it originally was intended to be an insult but was embraced by the golden crowd as a rally slogan.

You put it better than me, thanks.
