Gatorade?

Does anyone refuel thier dogs with this stuff after a long day in the field? My wife (an RN) thinks it would be a good idea to help the dog recover for the next day in the field. How about it?

I just use water but I've read that if you're gonna give your dog/s Gatorade, use a 50/50 Gatorade/water mix. Or better yet, use a 50/50 mix of Pedialyte/water. Pedialyte has the electrolytes but has less sugar. However, since dogs only sweat through their paws, my guess is they lose electrolytes at a much slower rate than humans.

Good question for a vet though.

From what I understand it is a No-No for dogs. There is something in it that is bad for their kidneys and other internal organs. That is the way I recall it and I don't give my dog anything but water.............Bob

I was reading in NAVHDA that corn syrup is good to give to your dogs in the field in order to mitigate hypoglycemia. Does anyone practice this?

I have tried all the above, including some of the "special" electrolytes designed for dogs. Unless it is above 70 out I found water does great. However, the 50/50 pedialyte works the best. This mixture is perfect for renewing those sore muscles after a long take tracking birds.

I have been told by vets at NC State that the gatorade is bad for the kindneys.

Regular Gatorade has a lot of sugar, not something I would probably give to dogs. The other thing is that since dogs do not sweat, they do not lose large amounts of electrolytes through panting as apposed to humans when they sweat. There is some conflictual evidence as to whether electrolytes even have any real beneficial use for dogs.

Maltodextrin which is derived from rice, corn and potatoes is a much better source of carbs for dogs and a good way to replenish glucose levels. But timing is everything and it must be given shortly after exercise for maximum benefit.
