Gas prices???

Just drove from Duluth to my hunting area…gas is around $4…did see some higher, saw some around $3.70. My prediction is a $4 handle will cause a decline in NR hunter #’s in many states. Not us addicts, but those on the fringe…it doesn’t really change things, $5 gas, a double from last fall, means another $100-150/trip, assuming 1000 miles of driving…but the ubiquitous gas price signs remind drivers constantly of what’s going on, and it may be like Chinese water torture for some…and it’s a reminder of higher prices in other items as well. $5 gas is probably where gas should be based on the history of where it’s been over the past 50 years…$3 gas was kinda normal 15, 20 years ago…it’s been a bargain recently. I drive 40,000 miles a year, about 2000 gallons…bargain prices =$5000 annually, very high ($5/gallon) would be $10,000….a $5,000 increase. Our health insurance increased $7000+ this year…maybe I’ll drop beef from our menu and go 100% tofu! 🤓

You’re right it will probably cause some NRs to back off this year. I put on about 12,000 miles on my fall hunt, much pulling a trailer. I just purchased a Yukon diesel. Ordered it last summer for last fall, it didn’t get built until February with all that the world has gone through in the last year. My wife just talked to someone who drove up from the lower 48 with a diesel. Cost over $2000 and they weren’t towing. The price won’t stop me but it will probably stop someone who has a set income and a mortgage and relatives to support.

Thinking a little more on this. I expect there to be a lot less hunters in MT this year. They changed the rules so the residents get the first week to themselves and quite frankly the hunting there last year was pretty dismal. To add to that they are still having extended drought. There were a lot less hunters last year and those that were there didn’t stay as long. Probably lots of room in the campgrounds this fall.

Its gone from $2.49/gal in late February to $4.09/gal here in MN.

Have to imagine it's much worse on the west coast.

I agree for all destination states, double the gas budget or plane tickets make a lot of people think twice.

Diesel $6.19 and gas $5.19 in southern illinois. Predict it will be this high till the fall. The longer this conflict continues, the more it will cost us to drive.

I think it was the summer of the “ Great Recession “ gas prices about doubled to 4 dollars or something. I could go fishing on a week night with no water skiers, no jet skies flying all over the place. The boat ramp was empty. I thought it was great. It didn’t last and neither will this. I drove to Alaska the summer of 2014 I remember playing 8 bucks a gallon on the Alaska highway. I would do it again in a heartbeat. People get all excited about the price of gas and it’s really just a small number at the end of the day. It does tend to raise the cost of everything but not much. Compare gas to the cost of healthcare or a house and gas is a bargain even at these prices. It’s not going to alter my plans in any way. I am kind of glad I bought the electric Cadillac before the credit expired. All my errands and running around town drive right on by every gas station. It’s just me and the dog but really anyone that has two or more vehicles one should be electric.

I’m not sure, I know some folks were on a tight budget before this all started. Sounds like maybe you and the dog weren’t.

I’d like an electric vehicle for running around but the 20 year old pickup still runs so I still drive it. At some point its value might start going up, hope I’m around to see it.

Happy hunting.

There was a time I rode with another guy…not every trip, but 1/2? 2/3? Guys died, moved, etc, now I never do…nor do I want to, but I could, I suppose. Some guys will make changes, including less hunting, riding with another hunter, hunt closer to home, etc. There’s a shit ton of birds out here, fun listening to the cackling in the pitch blackness. I’d give blood for gas $….if it came to that. Or, grant all these young, hot women their wishes and let them pay me to be their baby daddy! OK, I’ve done it a few times…it’s ok…the $ comes in handy. Kind of a hassle…🤨
