Only one small covey but they made it through our snows. Hopefully they are some egg laying chick hatching birds! Should have been 2 or 3 other coveys on this property but darned if Rocket Bob could find them.

Found two prairie chickens as a bonus!

It was good to get out looking for wild birds again. Was looking for sheds too but none found.

Good to hear you found some quail and some PC.

I saw a group of Chickens feeding on my way back home today.

birds

during the past five days in n. w. kansas i saw more pheasants running around than i did all last spring turkey hunting, quite a few single roosters, one group of 7 birds, a group of 3 hens and many singles. this area has always been a fringe area but seeing some left a nice feeling,. crowing was up over last year also

cheers

Sure hope these little suckers reproduce like crazy this spring! Pray for perfect weather.

I don't really care if I kill any but I sure do like watching my dogs point them.

Perfect weather is already late. Soil moisture is in the 30% range and going down fast. We need some significant moisture to turn this around and get the forbs/insects activated to provide for coming broods. Everybody get naked and do your best rain dance:) It's for the birds:)

We have got a pretty good lightning storm going on tonight, but no rain yet,

Helped a friend burn his place yesterday evening. Pretty sure I heard a covey fly out of the other side of the fence row while were burning,

I'm happy to hear some birds are being found. hope that is a sign that more than we think made it. hope the breeding season is the best in history! :)

Ground was covered with snow yesterday for a total of .06. That won't go far. Burned down south today and the critters were frolicing. Roosters were crowing in about 12 directions, turkey were gobbling and the whitetails were running by in groups of up to 30. There were teal, wood ducks, and shorebirds filling their space as well. Saw my first scissor-tail flycatcher male of the year! I love those elegant boys!

PD, your day outdoors sounds like an outdoor's man paradise. Great glimpse of your day.
Us city slickers love hearing real wild our door stories. Spring, summer or fall I love hearing quail whistle and pheasant crackle and crow.
Keep those quail and pheasant sightings and crowing reports coming.

Thanks guys! Toured one of our waterfowl areas we had a recent NAWCA grant on from DU. The work increased the water surface area from 40 acres to 200. It really maximized the attraction of the area for ducks. It is a really nice system now. I'd like to go down there mid-week next season and be overwhelmed by web-footed fowl! Phenomenal scenery besides the wetlands themselves!
