I have a question for you guys. Most of you know of my situtation, me being deployed to Iraq and all. My question is this, yesterday I was talking to my dog trainer and he mentioned that in December he would most likelly be going to help a friend guide hunts on his game farm in Liberal. He had asked if I would like for him to take my dogs out there with him. This would be good since it is kinda like free training and they would have birds in thier faces alot while I am not there. I trust this guy alot, he is one of the only ones I trust to take care of my dogs. Just not too sure how much I trust the clients. So my questions is if you guys were in my shoes and knew you weren't going to be able to put the birds in front of the dogs like you should this year would you let him take them?

It all hinges on HOW WELL you know this guy & trust him??? There are maybe one or two people in the entire world that I would trust with my dog, especially under those kind of conditions. If he is truly one of those RARE people, then I would have no qualms at all & it would be a win/win all around for you, the dog, & the trainer/guide - because the kind of person I am talking about would be able to size-up, pre-school & keep the hunters/clients as equally close & under control as the dog!!! You would get a level of wild-bird laden training that very few people are capable of paying for, which = no lost time/opportunity for you and your pup & a massive jump on the gun when you get home for the holidays!!!

But if there is any question/hesitation at all or any stone left unturned in conversation between the two of you PERIOD, then I would pass on it like a skunk or hot-potato!!!

BTW, if he is a really top-notch trainer & he asked specifically to take your dog along - it's most likely because he really, REALLY likes the dog & sees great potential over all the other pooches in the harem he is currently working with!!! Just my lousy two-cents...

I was deployed to Iraq a couple of years (2003) ago with the Army and was in the same situation that you are in. However my deployment went very quickly from the time we got orders to the time we were in country (about two months). So I didn't have alot to time to find someone to take care of my EP. I left him with one of my hunting buddies with the agreement my wife would send a check every month for food in return for taking care of him he got to hunt him for a year. When I got back and picked him up he had developed some habits that I did not care for that my buddy allowed him to do in the field. I like my dogs to work with-in 50 or so yards. Now my dog ran wild at a couple of hundred yards. It took at least two seasons to get him working close again. So what I would say is make sure the guy you leave you dog in care of knows the style you want your dog to work and works him that way. If you have time I would suggest you take you buddy on a couple of training sessions not just for your dog but also for your buddy.

On another note my dog did pick up some qualities that my buddy tought him that I did like such as loading up. He did get the dog to load for me. That's the best I can do for you. Good luck and Godspeed.

Thanks guys I appreciate the input. The guy I am referring to is the guy who has trained both my dogs and yes he really has a soft spot for the two of them. I trust this guy completelly but was just wondering what you guys thought. I think my wife would enjoy the time without the two of them alot as well, since the two of them and my son can be a handful while I am gone. I am more so just trying to get my youngest pup into a fair amount of birds even though I am not there. At the same time it won't hurt my oldest her mom to go get some more birds in front of her to stay fresh as well. Just don't want to waste a season for the dogs if I can. Since he has trained the both of them I am not worried about any ill traits they may pick up. I will just think of it as a free month of training since I usually send them to him periodically throughout the year. Thanks again fellas.

I think you are going to miss a golden opportunity if you pass on this. He is a Pro Trainer, so you know he will correct faults. Will teach basic commands that are needed in field work. He will do what ever is necessary to give you back 2 dogs that are well trained and field ready. Really what more could you ask.........Bob

Not Me

I would not let others take my dog hunting. I would lend a shotgun, but not my dog.

i would lean to letting the guy handle your dogs for other clients, based on what you have said......with this caveat. i would want to know that both dogs are absolutely steady to wing, shot and fall.......because the most likely incident would involve some client shooting the bird(s) and dog as the dog broke point and the birds took flight, ending up in a bad situation if the dog took some shot.

most guides brief there clients before the hunt, NOT TO SHOOT ON THE GROUND OR OVER THE DOG, but unless the dog is steady, there is always the chance someone could make a mistake, remember Dick Cheney??.......lol, seriously, for me that would be my only reservation with your guide(s)...they can end up handling some real goofball clients.....good luck.

No I wouldn't under those circumstances.....I would let him take the dog if he was going by himself...but not with strangers.

If your trainer was doing the guiding he would be with the hunting party...If there was issues that came about it would seem he would always have your best interest at heart to resolve and correct it as soon as possible...And he would always have control over your dogs the hunters just hunting behind them i wouldnt have problem with it...Good luck and thanks for everything you are doing for us over there...

make sure you out a price on the dogs so if anything happens to them you will have enough money to replace them the way they are I do guiding here and I use my buddies dogs sometimes and during the informational part beforer the hunt their are specific rules laid down and the clients sighn a paper saying they pay for the dog if it gets hurt or death falls due to their negligence and so far we have only had to claim it once but be sure he is stirn on the rules for hunting over the dogs so that the hunters fully understand

Also if you are paying him for traing your dogs at the same time, he is also going to get paid by the hunters for using them, kinda double dipping. you might ask him about this and if so, he should deduct their fee from yours.

Thanks guys for the input again. You have really made me look at this from alot of different angles. I am not too worried about him teaching anything into my dogs that I wouldn't want since he has already trained them both. I also don't fear them being steady to flush and to shot. He was more so doing this as a friend, knowing they wouldn't get out much this year he was offering to take them along. He has had me bring them to various seminars in the past along with a couple of hunters ed classes that they shoot birds at the end of. He really does enjoy my dogs and tells me all the time that I am lucky to have gotten two dogs like mine so early in life, he actually has one of the pups from my older female now too. I wouldn't be paying him either, this again is just something he offered to do. He will take them with him, get paid from his friend who owns the preserve and in turn get my two dogs into some birds for me this year when I can't. I will talk to him some more and figure out the fine details. I will let you know what happens. Thanks again guys.

Yes I would. Facts: dogs will be missing a season, the young one will miss alot of prime time. The likelyhood of a dog being killed is pretty slim. I would make it very clear that only your friend is the guide and handler, and that he pulls the dogs if he realizes he has got a dumbazs for a client.

@HUNTIN4FUN - Well then, waddaya waitin on - sounds a lot like "lucky you" to me - such a deal!!!

Thx again 4 serving all of us - my prayers & utmost respect are with you!!! Glad somebody can serve you (& your dogs) appropriately in return, while ur hands are tied!!!

If he is not charging you then i say let him do it, them dogs need birds killed over them
My son is presently on deployement there also. but he is on a sub.

Thanks guys again. After talking it over again the other day I have decided to let him take my dogs with him. It will help me out tremendously and it will benefit the dogs as well. It is also a months worth of birds day in and day out that I don't have to pay for. Kind of a win win situation for me the way I see it. Thanks again guys.
