First hunt

This morning was my daughter's first tag-along upland hunt. She's getting to be a seasoned deer and turkey hunter, but I was saving the best for last...

She gave me a solid 2+ miles walking through some pretty nasty cover. I think it would be good early and late in the day, but was empty when we passed through. I could tell she was getting burned out 2/3 of the way through, but I told her the same lies I tell myself and she believed them... "There's gotta be a bird in that plum thicket up ahead." And, "All this walking we did should have pushed the birds toward the truck, they'll hold at the end of the field."

Anyway, no birds sighted. I thought the last place we walked would be money, but nada... She still had a blast. Plus, I really just wanted to work out the kinks of hunting together before we go again on Saturday to the best pheasant spot I have.
I'm praying it still holds birds!

Sometimes the photos that don't turn out are my favorites. They really show the personalities the best... Never tried to link from my phone, here goes...

When you spend quality time with her and teach her the true meaning of why we upland hunt the birds a just the bonus. She may already know this!:) Well done!

I took my 11 year old daughter out for the first time for a little taste of Turkey Hunting. Bought the 10 dollar tag knowing it would probably never be filled, but the experience with Dad would be worth a lot more. The hunt lasted about 10 minutes until 3 horses decided to come check us out. she started to pick grass and feed them and they never left us alone for 2 hours. We left with her not saying she wanted to turkey hunt again but wanting a horse now!!! We did see and hear birds and she does really like the outdoors and hunting. We have been out several more times for different game and now it is all she wants to do. Good for you Toad and all the members getting their Boy's and Girls outdoors!:10sign:

Thats awesome! Good going dad!

I'm getting ready to take my little girl on a two day hunting trip out west Friday. Have to see if a sophomore in college can still shoot or not!

If I can say that in 10 years, I will know I have succeeded as a father. Good for you, good for your daughter!

@ everybody, we all have a lot to be thankful for!

Nice! When I was reading, I figured your daughter must be a little older to tramp along for 2+ miles. Not so though! She's a trooper. You ought to be proud. And good on you for getting her out there.

Took my wife and daughter to the best place I have access to. We saw probably 30 pheasants, but nothing with color gave me a shot. Had a few hens hold tight and give my daughter a good scare.

Had my wife block an escape route, but the birds didn't fear her at all. At least a dozen flew in "rock throwing" range from her, including at least half roosters. But she just stood there waving her arms, since she is a nonhunter. They must have thought she was showing them where to fly.

Nevertheless, it was a lot of fun and my wife and daughter have both experienced their first bird hunt with birds flying. Maybe next time we'll actually bag one.

Another milestone.... My daughter joined the elitest of elite hunting clubs! She has now emergency pooped in a field. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

I wish my wife would come out some time with me. She likes to watch some of the video of the dogs pointing, but that doesn't compare to seeing it in real time.

Maybe, give your wife a tennis racket the next time she blocks, she could knock them back into play

You've got a trooper there. Great pics.

I asked my wife if she had fun and she said, "ummmm NO". I said there had to be something she liked. She said the strategy part was interesting, but the walking on uneven ground through stickers sucked. She probably walked about a mile total, and it was brutal with no easy path anywhere... I would say it'll just be me and my daughters 99.99% of the time. Maybe when kid #2 is old enough we'll try it again.

Toad and Bleu thanks for inspiring me to stop making excuses and take my daughter out. She's been asking to go turkey hunting all year but I always think about not filling the tag not the experience and time spent together thanks gentelmen!

Recon, I hope you do take your daughter hunting if she wants to go.

Even though every rooster on the place was getting up 200 yards ahead of us, you couldn't have wiped the smile off my face on Saturday for anything. When my wife parked the minivan and walked the second place with us, I 'bout peed myself with joy. :10sign: Those birds are old and mega-educated. I would have given anything for a bit of snow instead of 60+ degree temps...

Anyway, my daughter has been turkey hunting with me since she was probably 4. Even now, I wouldn't even try taking her turkey hunting without a ground blind. And at that age if I only had room for a turkey call OR coloring books, I would bring the coloring books...
