First Aid Kit

Looking at putting a first aid kit together. I wanna see if its cheaper to buy the items seperate and make my own or to just buy full a kit. Problem is I'm not for sure what needs to go into it. So if anyone has suggestions on what to put in a kit, they would be appreciated. I'll probably buy a basic kit but just curious what everyone suggests more specifically for dogs and what you couldn't go without.

1. A Skin Stapler to close those larger cuts. You also need the tool to remove the staples.
2. EMT Gel
3. Vet Wrap and Gauze
4. Tape (athletic and/or waterproof)
5. Forceps to pull quills
6. Eye Ointment
7. Rimadyl (I carry a few tabs for those days the dogs are a little stiff & sore from the day before)
8. Skunk Off

All of the above are great tools to have, just make sure the skunk off is peroxide (also for treating wounds), baking soda, and dish soap. I also carry a bottle of saline for flushing eyes.

Probably wouldn't hurt to have something for intestinal parasites (giardia) from drinking in contaminated ponds, standing water etc... You can get Fish Zole over the counter which is a brand name sold in pet stores, but it's exactly the same as Flagyl or the ingredient (Metronidazole) which is the main treatment for Giardia in dogs.

Something I keep in my first aid kit is an old pair of panty hose. If you have a dog that cuts its ear you may have a hard time keeping the bandage on after some head shakes. Just flip the ear on top of the dogs head and then place the panty hose over the head to keep the ear from hanging down. It may look or sound silly but it is a lot better than haveing blood splaters on the wall of the vet office when you walk in and your dog shakes his head.

Benadryl - have used it when dog ran into a ground hornet nest. It works.

3M Vet wrap

EMT Gel

Stapler - is a good idea, make sure you flush out the wound of all dirt and debris to prevent infection.

Forceps - remove thorns, cactus, porky quills ...

Buffered dog aspirin - effective pain reliever

Eye wash - flush debris from eyes

Q-tips - clean ears

Nail Clippers

de-skunking solution - homemade or commercially available

small bottle of dog shampoo with tick killer ingredient

Not really first aid, but can save a trip (day or distance)
Doggy Boots
Chest plate vest - if dog chest becomes raw ...
Collar with cell phone number on collar

Invaluable
Your vets phone number on your cell phone
Phone number of vet in area where you are hunting
