Nonresident either-sex deer permits allow the taking of one white-tailed deer buck, doe, or fawn. The cost of the permit is $322.50, and if successful in the drawing, the applicant must also purchase a nonresident hunting license, $72.50, prior to hunting.

i know this is a pheasant hunting forum, but it is hard to believe a large number of NR's will pay $395 to tag a Kansas deer...this is crazy....i can buy a lot of beef for $395....that doesn't include gas or lodging!

I don't get it either. I have friends that go to Iowa and pay somewhere around $400 for a tag. I have never understood that, although that may be because I think deer hunting is as boring as being in the doctor's waiting room.

Believe it or not, there are a ton of non-residents who apply for the draw. I don't understand it either really. I do know that the rates for NR's in Kansas are comparable or slightly cheaper than programs in other states. I believe much of it has to do with the copious amount of walk-in hunting here. That, and the fact that most hunting programs and many hunting websites have crowned Kansas as one of the best places in the nation for trophy hunting.

I am not a deer hunter either, but the last poster said exactly why my buddy always wants ot hunt deer there, do to their size of eating all that corn through the summer. We see monster deer there every year, I agree it is expensive, but for one to hang on the wall I guess you got to pay the price.

To each their own. I can buy a cleaned and picked turkey that's ready to roast for less than the price of a turkey tag. And I would guess that it's no different for an ounce of any wild game meat versus the price at the grocery store. We're all paying a premium for the hunting experience.

Think about how many meals of quail you got for the price of your guns, ammo, hunting clothing, license, dog, dog food and vet bills for the year, fuel, and the very "necessary" 4X4... Or better yet.... don't think about it.;)

Lots to recommend deer hunting, not only is it expensive, but you get the added bonus, in Kansas at least, and lots of other states, of winning the bad luck derby and getting a deer with chronic wasting disease. Bon Apetite!
