Family needs a dog

Thanks everyone for your feedback. One more question. How much should I expect to pay for a health checked, well bred pup?

Look at it this way the purchase price is the least expensive part of the dog. But you want one that has a good possibility of having that "hunting drive", is physically sound. I had several chances to buy puppies for a couple of hundred less than I ended up paying. Puppies that the "breeders" never tested, health or trainability. They just saw $. I have a Little Brown Dog who is a family member not just a tool.

My recommendation is this: if you look at a pup or a breeding and have any apprehension, walk away. Even if you have a deposit that will be lost, walk away. I've purchased pups from all over the country and the common thread I can tell you from experience is that the little voice in your head isn't affected by the wiggly loveable puppy in front of you. It's telling you to walk away. If it's silent, you may have a warm lap on the way home. Research the breeder and the litter. If that is up to the muster, look at the pups. If the pups meet your standards, get-er-done. Then the pressure is on you to do your part to train and expose the pup to the conditions and birds that you will be hunting. If the breeding is right and you do your part, you should have 12-15 years of bliss ahead of you! Good luck with this pursuit!!!

:D What do you do when the pond freezes over, the hunting season has ended? The pair had fun!!! I don't remember ever getting him the hockey stick and I know he never had skates.(kid or dog :p)

I've been to a few places where I thought I could have limited on ducks with a tennis racket. Never thought to use a hockey stick! I do like the little brown dogs. Love to have one for ducks and picking up pheasants behind the setters!

D-Man,

Purchase price? Do your homework and you will find well bred dogs, with a solid health guarantee will cost around $1,000 right now. Specialty breeds and high end, proven through testing dogs will double that figure or more. The old adage you get what you pay for rings true with dogs as well.

Llewellin Setter

Another dog to consider would be a female Llewellin Setter. They run about 35-40 lbs average. Are great family dogs, and hard to beat in the field.........
