Nice herdI went to a farm today to talk to a gov't guy and non profit lady about a pollinator project going in. Turkeys galore. Shooting a few fall birds, even hens, wouldn't put a dent in the population here. But I usually wait for a spring gobbler. Too many fish to catch and roosters to chase this time of year.
Those big gobblers don't eat that good.I've only shotten gobblers. Often I would have shot a jake if given the opportunity, but of the 5 turkeys I've gotten a crack at all have been toms. The first four were all 3 years or older big mature birds. This year I shot a 2 year old tom that took a nap right behind me in some tall grass under a pine tree. A few years ago in WI I had a hen come by and she had a scraggly beard. That's a legal bird there, but I just couldn't pull the trigger on her.

One thing I'm observing through your posts, even though I'm 3 states away, is that those old Montana Gobblers so far this fall are always two steps ahead of you.I saw a hen with 6 polts yesterday. That means a gobbler is in the general vicinity. If it wasn't so blazing hot, I would go after him.
