Fall gobblers

I personally don't even think there should be a fall turkey hunting season.

Limit one legally bearded male turkey in the spring and be done. We don't need to go down the Kansas road with turkeys and pheasants in others states.
Speak for yourself. In WI I have so many damn turkeys they run the pheasants off the ground!

I'm going out duck hunting this weekend (WI opener) and might try to pop a gobbler too. I know where they love to hang out. Trouble is getting close enough to shoot one.

We have had extreme heat all fall.Im sure when it cools off, the turkeys will appear.

I'm just wondering where those gobblers went?? I bet they are still in the area.A bit of scouting will improve my chances.

Very little rain in September. Hot and dry.I know these turkey are in yhis drainage somewhere, but there are 3 land owners, and one guy is a definite no.
The next thing I would try is follow the food. Here the poults are still with the hens. She will take them to hay fields for grasshoppers and such. Also, small acorns and shoots in the woods. But basically, you need to walk your ass off.

I did see 2 poults while out grouse hunting, and heard a bird putt, but didn't see it in thick cover.I know there are turkeys in that area, but I'm sure they are around water.I know where this spring is, and they may be up there,if the lions are not around.

I saw today where some critter killed a jake.I heard a bird fly,did not see it.Shot a hopper and a duck.Very hot,very dry.

.I only shoot gobblers, no jakes, no hens.
I've only shotten gobblers. Often I would have shot a jake if given the opportunity, but of the 5 turkeys I've gotten a crack at all have been toms. The first four were all 3 years or older big mature birds. This year I shot a 2 year old tom that took a nap right behind me in some tall grass under a pine tree. A few years ago in WI I had a hen come by and she had a scraggly beard. That's a legal bird there, but I just couldn't pull the trigger on her.

I have dispatched 23 gobblers in 30 years of hunting. 6 jakes 10 hens.Ive gotten really picky the l ast 10 years.I have done some bow hunting. I don't hunt big game, I consider those people lowbagger.

NOTHING I've ever hunted has the eyesight they do! Heard a large group of hens and poults yesterday shortly after flydown but couldn't catch up. Later had a Tom gobbling like it was spring! I think they were both Jakes. One busted me on the way in, but I got between them. Hid behind a brush pile. The gobble mouth stood at about 40 yards. Then the Jake I bumped snuck in and stood at 20 yards. I waited until he turned his back and tried to draw. He saw me anyway and booked. Mr gobble mouth finally flew up in a tree to get a better look then he split. Used mainly jake yelps. This will be my 5th year Hunting them with a bow the first week then a 20 ga. the rest of season, for a total of about 5 weeks with an r & d long bow. I've made it to full draw once and missed. My hat's off to the Indians!! Heading back out in a few!!

I agree they have spectacular eyesight, and are usually very smart about hunters. I did everything right last spring, and missed a 5 yard shot. That still bugs me! I may go out today for a looksee.I know where a herd is in general, but I don't know if I can get permission. Good luck on your hunt.

I went to a farm today to talk to a gov't guy and non profit lady about a pollinator project going in. Turkeys galore. Shooting a few fall birds, even hens, wouldn't put a dent in the population here. But I usually wait for a spring gobbler. Too many fish to catch and roosters to chase this time of year.

That was always my thought too. Why would someone hunt a turkey in the fall when there's a dedicated spring season?

There's better things to be doing in the fall...or should I say late summer based on the current weather trend.
