Hunted all over central Nebraska, and I have this felling bird hunting dying before our eyes. I don't know what else to do a total of driving 663 miles all hunting not to get there and only one rooster. I know it is not lack of good dogs or good hunters. I'm just lost for words.

Pheasants forever claims they put a total of 17 roosters and quail in the bag today, all on public land on their rooster road trip. That seems pretty good to me.

Where? I'm starting to double think. I hunt with a group or great hunter with great dogs, and it seems like I said gone.

RECORD-SETTING ROAD TRIP. The Open Fields and Waters Program is a joint project of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and Pheasants Forever that protects habitat and allows you to hunt. Are these areas worth trying? During Pheasants Forever?s*‪#‎RoosterRoadTrip‬*stop in northeast Nebraska today, a group of hunters and bird dogs worked up a nice mixed bag of 17 pheasants and quail in outstanding upland habitat.Video and a photo gallery from today?s action will be posted later this evening.*www.roosterroadtrip.org

We humans are not too good at both understanding the cycles of nature, or being patient enough to wait them out. If you lived through the dirty thirties, you would have forecast that things would never be good again. Yet we've been throught several cycles of productivity since and there are more to come. As humans, we also create cycles through our politics via the farm programs and farmer's cycles of busting ground vs planting back unproductive ground. Buy a puppy now because by the time it is hitting full stride we will once again be in the birds.

You have yet to experience true gamebird decline.
I hope you never do.
Every gamebird does not have the blessings given a pheasant....and so, a pheasant hunter.

There are plenty of birds to be had in south central neb. Just not every piece of public has them in good numbers. This last weekend me and my partner limited both mornings off a piece of public ground that we had to ourselves. The reason is that we scouted and walked preseason and it is easy to overlook this spot because it doesn't look the part, but remember the old saying in the land of the blind the one eyed man is king so if the surrounding area looks like a parking lot than even poor looking habitat becomes great habitat for the birds in that area. Also remember that sometimes that old farm pond across the road from the lake has better fishing than the lake.

Well put. This is exactly what is going on, Cycles. We are coming out of a drought that has not been seen for many, many years it will take time and good weather conditions to improve. Ever wonder why some years the roads a covered with dead rabbits, and the next year is covered with foxes. Cycles.

According to the NE Game and Parks website, it is concentrating its pheasant development on the counties in the SW corner of the state. Following two years of bad drought, it is not surprising that hunting is bad. Moreover, about every CRP field in that area was hayed or grazed last year. The birds will come back with normal weather.
