Even during recession, hunting remains bulletproof industry

Good Post Chuck, that has been true for many years...........Bob

Thanks for sharing onpoint! I don't think that meat in the freezer is the reason hunting remains strong as an industry. I think tradition has more to do with it. We all know the truth about how much it costs per pound to hunt for your food unless you're a damn good shot and you can hunt w/o getting in your truck first!

agree- all things considered- you buy a license and go out and enjoy- except for out of state hunts where can you have such a great time as being out hunting - regardless is you shoot alot, have a dog, or have a bunch to go with

agree, just "tripping" down the highway, seeing the sights and hunting with friends i only see during bird season makes it all worth while...i always get my limit of beer.....birds are a bonus and watching the dogs ever hopeful attitude for finding birds!

That's right, scrounge some gas money, grab the dog, some shells, and wear out some boot leather. All your cares fade away when your following the dog.

I usually carry a tent, sleeping bag, coleman stove, lawn chair, cooler with some game and frozen water bottles-

Were good to go, I called ahead and they said the weigh station on I-90 before Sioux Falls is closed....HAMMER DOWN....Mitchell or bust

:D:cheers:

It would be interesting to see how much money would have been spent if there was not a post-election gun/ammo buying craze. I bet we would find that the gun industry was also hit by the economic downturn.

Point, that is funny as hell!!!! The only problem is that it looks like me headed to elk camp!!!! I am only missing the rocking chair, otherwise it would be the Beverly Hillbillies!!!!!! LOL:10sign:

Bleu...been there done that many times myself. Sometimes the truck just isn't enough. I have to pull my tandem axle car hauler behind. The next trip to Sd might be one of them. NO!!! It will be for sure..LOL

I agree with you guys. Nobody saves any money by hunting, especially bird hunting. Maybe if you shoot a moose or something I could see the cost per pound getting reasonable.

Also, there was definately a major gun/ammo buying spree after the '08 election. I know that I cut back on my hunting purchases the last few years.

I should try the meat in the freezer thing with my wife and see how far it gets me.

I have been going to SD for the past 15 years and the last 5 years have seen the most pheasants and the fewest hunters. I think the big boys probably still show up on opening weekend. However, I hunt 3rd weekend and it has been pretty slow to say the least.
