English Setters

A guy I work with just got an English Setter puppy, but doesn't know the first thing about training it to hunt, etc. At first I assumed Setter=flushing dog, but then I see that "wilson" posted in the puppies section something about puppies pointing. A quick Google search is all over the board.

Is his dog a pointer or a flusher? Or is it that he might have pointing ability if that is brought out in him?

Set me straight!

I agree - they are great pointers. Of course with poor training they can become flushers...:D

Setters are pointers. They would say The dogs would set the birds for the men to throw nets over the birds and dogs That is how they got there name (Setters)

If your English Setter doesn't point, from an early age and often, there is something wrong. I have trained dozens of setters, pointers, german shorthairs, and now french britts, I have seen all of the above on ocassion take some time to come around to establishing point, except setters. They generally require a lighter hand, and may take some time to finish, but the point part is pre-installed at birth.
